Where are the display ports on a MSI 990fxa gaming?

you have to have a separate video card

Of course it's possible, it doesn't have any graphics capability. You need a dedicated GPU to go with it.

Is there a specific video card you go for or can it be any, because I thought that you have to install the graphics card drivers before being able to use the display ports on the graphics card?

Practically any PCIe x16 card but should match your processor so you don't buy too expensive one so it can't be used 100% or too weak one that wouldn't play your intended games. Also have to watch how much power it needs and if your PSU can supply it.

I've already brought a graphics card - gtx 1080, so very powerful (and expensive!) and I've checked the psu i have, which can supply it. I was wondering about the graphics card, because I thought that the graphics card had to be installed onto the computer before you could connect any display cables (in my case HDMI) to the monitor from the graphics card to make the monitor show anything.
I don't know if you know much about cpus, but is there a way (except from putting it into another computer) to test if it works?

Of course it has to be installed in the PCIe x16 slot in MB and to connect monitor to it. If your CPU (which one is it ?) is compatible with MB it should work, otherwise it has to be tested on knowing good system to check it. Hope you have at least FX 8350 or 8370 processor.

The processor I have is AMD FX - 9590, which I'm pretty certain is compatible with my motherboard. I do know about the issues with overheating with the cpu. The cpu cooler I have is the Noctua NH-D15, which seems to be keeping it nice and cool, but I can't tell until I actually do something that would cause information to be processed, like a game.

You'll be OK than, that cooler is one of if not best air cooler. As you said, everything will be more clear once you stat some heavy game or test.
Download and use AMD Overdrive for best data on temps and other parameters o AMD systems.

Install the 1080, it will be picked up as a standard VGA driver & will give you a display fine.

Install the Nvidia driver package & you're good to go.
