That's why I usually can find Maxtors cheaper than Western Digital. (Not
trying to start a war, but from my experience, I've had a much better
experience with WD than Maxtor.) Of three Maxtor hard drives, one lasted
not quite 3 years (it was expensive when we bought it new too) another
didn't even last 4 months, and the other is still working and has been for a
little over a year. I've used around 10 WD hard drives and only one has
given me troubles. (It was DOA too.) I do think, however, WD hard drives
are louder, but I think they run better. The one Seagate hard drive I've
used is the one that I am replacing that quit - in the eMachines. It was 3
years old and probably what did it was I'd leave the computer off for a
month or two, which I guess might have been hard on it just like a car.
(The eMachines is my secondary computer.)
WD hard drive ages... (It's kind of difficult to follow this, but here we
go.)

In case you're curious, one of the Maxtors (the 3-year old) started giving
hard drive failure immenent warnings. The other was having data loss
problems. You'd no more than put something on it, then it would go corrupt.
Reformatted, tried installing Windows, and it would get stuck. Tried again,
then said that files were corrupt or missing after the installation was
complete. Another time, it said that it couldn't load certain files when I
tried re-installing again.
