Where can I start learning how to make a Speech Recognition App?

I'm not sure this question fits any of the categories here at Tom's, but this is my favorite forum because I always get some useful feedback.

I want to write an App for iphone and android which uses speech recognition, but I don't really know where to start looking for how to incorporate that into my apps. All I need is letter sound recognition. Anybody have any idea where to start?

By "better sound recognition", do you mean "Better than what Google and Apple are doing"?

I don't know about Apple, but in Android I can choose Google Voice input in any application which has keyboard input.

sorry for the late reply. I mean letter like the ABCs, specifically vowels, but it needs to be quite quick. I want real-time visual feedback of what letter sound is being spoken.
