[SOLVED] where do backup files live on my mac?

I can't locate them anywhere and I have and unnecessary 200GB of them that I would really like to free up…

Are you asking about a system backup or iTunes backup or a backup from an iPhone, etc.? If yes, those (iTunes, iPhone, etc.) are in hidden folders.

You could also try something like CCleaner for the Mac to do a disk cleanup.

If you can't see the files how do you know they exist? What tells you that you have 200GB of "backup files"?
