MS tries to remove dos from ME so that it would boot faster and they claimed that it would operate more stably. However this would cause some problems for power users of course...
Try booting from win98 boot disk and run in command prompt.

If that prog works, great, if not, then create a WinME Emergency Boot Disk, this will give you a nice DOS prompt to flash your BIOS, that's what I had to do.
Listen to ed all the other post's are wacked!!! Sorry guys but he wants to update his bios not load an os. you do not want himem and em386 present when performing a bios flash. make your self a boot disk on a win 98 machine by putting in a blank floppy, clicking on the a drive, then check the "copy system files only" box. This will give you the dos prompt that you need to perform a bios flash
