Where do files go when computer crashes during transfer

Hello,
i was in the process of transerring files from my external hard drive to my computer when it crashed and now i i only have 5% of the transferred files. does anyone know where the rest of the files may have gone?
any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

As long as you did a direct copy and not a Cut -> Copy (assuming you're using windows) the files should be in the folder that you were transferring from. Just look for the folder(s) on your external hard drive, they should still be there. If they're not, then you are very unlucky and managed to corrupt those files on your external HDD.

Well, as long as you haven't put any new files onto the external drive they are technically still there. You might want to look into software that can recover deleted files, you should be able to get your files back but you will most likely end up with some corrupted and unusable files as well.

Unfortunately I'm less experienced in file recovery than others here so there isn't much advice I can give you other than to try some programs out first and if that doesn't work out there are people that you can hire (expensively) to recover your data.

The files are still there until they are overwritten. So DON'T write anything to the drive. Windows just doesn't know they exist. Recuva is a free file recovery program and should be able to find them. Easeus also makes some great file recovery programs that have free trials.
