Where do i find my personal files after i have recovered my pc

Hello,
my laptop(Gateway)crashed so i used the built-in recovery system which stated all my data would be saved! Now my pc is up & running again i cannot for the life of me find aany of my 300 odd photos i had stored on here. Can anyone suggest what i can do to recover them, should i try a program like RECUVA? etc?

Are you sure you read the recovery message correctly ??? -- normally using the built in recovery will restore the system to the state it was in when first purchased (thus reformatting the HDD and installing the original image that the factory copied to a hidden partition on your HDD - so nothing will be recoverable -- it normally warns you to be sure and backup anything you want to keep prior to using it !
