Look in local business dumpsters (seriously)
Goodwill/Salvation Army

Re-instating a machine with a removed hard drive to fully operational is very helpful moving towards the skills you wish to learn,I guess is the best way I can put it.

I think I covered tutorials with the 'not working pc boxes,screw drivers, nothing to lose,open chrome page in the background' scenario.
There are no shortcuts, most of the 'techies' I meet have some system course from M/Soft or other and are next to useless with hardware.
