I was using Windows 7 and a lot of games including those from Steam tended to put their saved games into the Documents folder under my username.

In order to get my new PC build with Windows 11 to recognise and load those saved games, what do I need to do with them? Should I be pasting them somewhere else? I'm not familiar with the new folder structure.

It'll be in one of the following places
  • %userprofile%\Documents
  • %userprofile%\Saved Games
  • %AppData%
  • %localappdata%
  • Where the game is installed
  • C:\ProgramData (this is really rare)
  • If you're using a game that requires Ubisoft Connect, it may be where that's installed
The weird % things are:
  • %userprofile%: Points to C:\User\[username]
  • %AppData%: Points to C:\User\[username]\AppData\Roaming
  • %localappdata%: Points to C:\User\[username]\AppData\Local

OK... I copied most of these across directly. Hopefully it doesn't make anything go horribly wrong in Windows 11. Some of the files were already there which is odd since the others weren't...

Did you copy the folders wholesale? For AppData\Roaming or AppData\Local, you should go through them to trim what you may not actually need. For instance:
  • Microsoft folder: usually this just has the pre-installed apps and such.
  • Temp folder: temporary data, so obviously nothing in here is important.
  • Some apps install in %AppData%, like Chrome and Discord. You can remove those since you should reinstall the apps instead.

I tried to avoid some useless junk but copied most of what was there. It won't be a problem as long as it doesn't actively make Windows act weird. I have a huge amount of storage.
