There's been a sharp decline in the quality of solid USB enclosures available to buy. It seems like the majority of them are either hot boxes with no active cooling or docking type enclosures that don't secure the drive in place well enough for them to be portable which I need. I've been shocked to see all plastic completely sealed 3.5 inch enclosures- like who wants to cook their hard drive like that?

The last one I bought 3 years ago was this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KGNXTE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which has been discontinued. I paid $39, it has USB and esata connections, is all aluminum, and the drive is secure enough that it doesn't rattle around inside. The thing is solid and it looks good. I put feet on the side so it lays flat.
I even still have this one that I bought 11 years ago https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004AA0QO6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (also discontinued) and that bad Larry is still kicking.

Contrast this with the only comparable offering on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0851VT3WF?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details. The list price is the same and it was rattling before I even unboxed the thing. Plus the fan is freakin' loud so it's going back

I've looked all over and every time I see a product that fits my requirements, it's sold out or discontinued. Does anyone have a line on quality enclosures?

I am going to offer up the market has shrunk since so many of us use SSDs and NVMes. I also have some old Sata 1 and 2 enclosures, but they are so slow I only look at them and thank the tech gods for SSDs.

SSDs are great but not when you have several TBs of data to backup or transport. Spinnies are still the most economical
