Hi. I recently built a Windows 10 rig. Where do I extract my drivers to? Where's the best place to extract them? Also can I delete the extracted files afterwards, or do they have to be kept for the driver to remain functional?
Thanks everyone. So, does the driver installation install the files elsewhere on the computer, meaning I can remove the downloaded and extracted files once I've ran the setup?
Correct. In the case of Nvidia and AMD drivers for example, they extract to an appropriately named folder on C: drive that they use to do the actual installation from. When the driver installation is finished, that folder (and the downloaded compressed folder) can be safely deleted.
Some folks like to keep the extracted folder around in case they want to do another driver install in the future. But there's no other reason to keep it around imo. It just wastes space.
If you are extracting a compressed download file, you can extract the individual driver files anywhere you like. Once you run the executable file in the package to install the drivers, the downloaded file and the extracted files can be deleted. Their work is done.
The drivers should come with your motherboard. If you don't have them, you can download them from your manufacturer's web site. I like to put a copy of them on the C: drive so I have them handy just in case. They don't take an appreciable amount of space.
