Where to put the left connector on the floppy disk

Some floppy drives have power connector on the right.

Ithink you are asking about how the 34 pin data cable plugs into the drive. The red wire on one side of the data cable is always pin 1. In this picture, pin 1 will be on the side farthest from the power connector.

In that photo, the connector on the left is the power connector. Look for a cable with a matching connector that comes from your power supply (the power supply is the box that the power cord from your wall outlet plugs into). If it doesn't have a cable with the right kind of connector, you'll have to get a "Molex to Floppy Power Adapter" something like this.

Here's another pic of a "floppy drive power connector" - this one has a "Y" which retains the larger "Molex" connector - used for IDE hard drives.

I respectfully have to disagree with jsc above, the red wire (pin 1) on that picture is towards the center of the floppy drive. I'm not sure I've ever seen a floppy with pin one on the outside edge of the drive case. The "flip" in the cable is on the pin one side also - you can barely see the flip in the picture towards the center. And the missing pin is next to pin 1 on the drive.

You can't trust the "idiot-proof" connectors on floppy drives, many have the notch out on both sides. In that pic, you can see the notch and it hasn't been removed.

If the floppy drive access light stays on when you power-up, the cable is reversed. Shut off immediately and fix it.

I just did what I should have done before I jumped to delusions - closely checked one of my old cases that still had a floppy drive in it. You're right. I was wrong. :( Thanks for being polite about it. :)

I stopped building computers with floppy drives in them several years ago. I have a USB floppy that I use when I need it - on the average, maybe three times a year.

True. You get a floppy drive light and an error message saying no floppy drive is present. If you are not going to install a floppy drive, you can into the BIOS in the Standard Features and deactivate it.
