Where Will I See a Signficant Upgrade with AMD RYZEN and SOCKET AM4?

I am currently running an AMD RYZEN 3 1300 chip with 16gb of DDR4-2132 (1600mhz) memory. Built this machine a year and a half ago (approximately) and was my first build in about 10 years. I am aware that there is an opportunity to expand memory and the processor. I am seeing an AMD Ryzen 7 chips with 8 cores and threads for aroudn $200 and some Ryzen 5's for around $170.

I know that bigger chip numbers and more threads are not always the only indicators in the cost/performance hunt. My top end of spending on the chipset is $200. My top end on the memory at the moment is around $150. Any combo of the two is fine with me, but don't plan to do any further spending on this machine beyond this for another year or two.

From your experiences, where is my money best spent in this scenario, what other info would be useful, and thank you in advance. I know enough to have purchased and assembled this machine previously, but am no longer able to keep up on the latest and greatest. Thank again ladies and gents!

As the others have asked, what are you trying to accomplish?
If you want to game only, then I would say update your BIOS and get a Ryzen 5 2600X. You could also sell your Ryzen 3 1300 and spend the extra money towards a Ryzen 7 2700 if you need those extra threads.

If possible I would also sell the current memory and buy faster memory (3000MHz or above)

Sorry for the SUPER late response. I am doing photo editing and some light video. I am a hobbyist and a limited budget. I have an NVIDIA GEFORCE 1050ti. I am running 2 sticks of DDR4 8gb ram. 1064mhz (15-15-15-36)

Would 16gb of that at 3000mhz show a significant performance improvement over more memory at the same speed?

Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. A320MA-M.2-CF (AM4). I am not gaming, just trying to improve overall performance for photo editing and video editing within a budget. TY in advance. Sorry for the late response

yeh youll notice a big difference in boot times, app starting, multi-threading, and compression rates all frmo faster ram. I recently OC'd my ram from 2133 to 2966 with a Ryzen 5 and my computer performance went up around 12-15% according to userbenchmark.

So as not to make another dumb memory purchase, is there any certain brand you can point me to and what should I expect in approximate pricing for better RAM? What speed should I be looking for. Not sure I want to do too much overclocking as it has been a long while since I did this work. It is the family PC so I need stability. TY

I have GeiL SuperLuce 3000 and its amazing. XMP 2.0 Profile OC'd it from 2133 to 3000 without and issues. Ive heard XPG is great, ive had good luck in the past with Crucial, Ballistix, and G.Skill. Corsair has a great reputation. 100-150$ will get you a great set of DDR4 16gb.
