Which 23"/24" monitor

Hi

I am looking at getting 2x 23" or 1x 24" monitor as I want to replace my 2x 19" Viewsonics.

I am finding it hard to pick a monitor as when I read reviews of top 2011 monitor they seems to be out of stock or no longer around. i.e Samsung PX2370

I mainly to the following:
1) Gaming (FPS i.e BF3)
2) Working/Development
3) The odd movies but not that many

During my looking I have come accross three DELL:
24" - U2410 / U2412M
23" - U2312HM

My thinking was for the price of the U2410 I could get 2x U2312HM. I was thinking that the 23" would be fine for me but I am not 100% sure on the monitor choice.

Please help me by providing me with good gaming monitors.

I find it a touch strange that all three screens you've picked are IPS. Not that that's a bad thing per se, it's just that they demand a premium over TN screens and the benefits for gaming in landscape are typically not worth the increase in price.

The u2410 and 2412m are both 1920x1200 16:10 screens. The u2410 supports wide-gamut color. The 2312hm is 1920x1080 16:9. All three will have slower than TN response time, while the input lag on the 2412m and 2312hm will be better than most TN.

At the end of the day it's hard to recommend any of these screens based on what you've stated you're doing. If you were running 3x in Portrait mode the u2412m would be the easy pick, but 2x in landscape really I see little benefit for IPS.

I'd also like to be able to recommend a 16:10 screen because it's a more natural gaming resolution, but unless you're willing to go to 22" it's tough to find these screens at reasonable prices.

The Hannspree SL231DP is a 23" 1920x1080 LED TN screen that can be had for 129.99 until 1/2. It gets great reviews and the price is really tough to beat.

The Asus VH242H is a 23.6" 1920x1080 TN screen that can be had for 159.99 until 1/2. It's one of the premier gaming screens on the market and has been a staple in builds for awhile.

If I were buying between the two I'd lean towards the Asus just because it has an established reputation for being a great gaming screen.

Keep in mind that I'm not dismissing the Dells. I'll be purchasing 3x of the u2412m for my next build. I'll be using them in portrait mode however where the viewing angles of IPS are needed. Again, I just have a hard time recommending them for landscape gaming as it's just not needed.

Thanks for the reply as looking for a new monitor is not easy. It is like information overload and I still am unclear which monitor to go for. All I know is that I do more gaming than work.. =)

I think the reason I was looking at the Dells was for the following reason:
1) I like the ergonomics of the screen. I can adjust the monitor easily.
2) I knew that the IPS were better for colour but were slower on the response times. 23" was suppose to be rather low for an IPS screen

This said I have not made up my mind as I am not sure if they are correct for me.

I take it the viewing angles on the IPS are needed more for having portrait. Hence why you find it hard to recommend the Dell for just 2x setup.

What 22" monitors should I look at? I have not ruled them out but just that I have not found any 22" that recommended.

So if you had a choice for 2x monitors you would go with ASUS VH242H rather than the Dells.

Don't get me wrong. I believe the Dells are a better monitor. You'll get richer color, better viewing angles, deeper darks and contrast. These are all benefits of going IPS over TN.

With that being said I also believe in buying for what you need and maximizing value. It's tough to justify a 2x price tag over the the Asus for gaming purposes.

I recommend 22" because you can find them in 1680x1050, which while is a smaller pixel count than 1920x1080 it offers a 16:10 viewing ratio which was designed for gaming. 16:9 was designed for HDTV and is better served for movie watching, not necessarily playing games.

The Asus VW224T can be had for $144.95. It's 22" 1680x1050. I know this seems counter-intuitive as you're losing screen size, you're losing pixels, and it's more expensive than say the HannsG I linked earlier. I cannot however emphasis enough the difference between 16:10 vs 16:9. For gaming there's no comparison. All I can recommend on this front is to get yourself in front of a 16:9 and a 16:10 and see for yourself. You could also view images/videos compariing 1920x1080 to 1680x1050.

The next step up for 16:10 is 1920x1200 which is what the two Dells (u2410 and u2412m) represent. They are great screens, and in my opinion at $300 the u2412m represents the best value in monitors today. Of course the price is the over twice as much as the 22" Asus 1680x1050. Only you can decide if that kind of premium is worthwhile.

Yeah, 2x Portrait isn't exactly an ideal setup. 3x Portrait on the other hand is a very nice configuration, here's the setup I'm currently using (3x Dell 2209wa 22" 1680x1050 IPS in portrait for a total of 3150x1680):

Thanks for advice as it is appreciated. So it would be best for me to get a 16:10 monitor.

I was looking at the 24" but then found that I could get 2x 23" dells for less than 1x 24" Dell. So this is why I was thinking I could just get 2x of the 23". I had set aside around £300+ for a monitor hence my thinking which could be flawed. =P

I guess it would better to spend my money on 1x 24" screen rather than split it over 2x 22/23" screens.

If I get 1x 24" monitor then that would be better for gaming as my 2nd screen is mainly used for information i.e controlling servers or webpages. but when working it is handy having 2 screens when developing. I could just use my old 19" and put my money towards the 1x 24" screen.

What 24" monitor should I be looking at.
Other than the u2412m what else should I consider?

I need to see what the 16:10 vs 16:9 ratio is like. I cannot do this until 2nd Jan as everywhere will be closed on the 1st Jan. Happy New year all!!!

In the UK I have www.scan.co.uk as the main choice to buy from. There are others but I have bought many things from scan and know they are good and trust worthy.

I cannot find the Asus VW224T in the UK. Any other 22" that you can recommend?
