Which 5.1 speakers?

Hey everyone

I am interested in buying a nice set of 5.1 speakers. I'm looking for something in the $200 range (i'm planning on buying from newegg or a similar retailer that sells cheaper than retail parts, so the retail price can be a bit higher). I don't need incrediably loud speakers, but I would like good quality. The size of the speakers is not really an issue. If possible, I would like to find some with a stand, since I will be putting them in a very large room but I want localized sound (I could always just go to the dump and pick up some old broken lamps and attach the speakers to them, but I would prefer a stand since it looks nicer). Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks for your help!

I'll spare you the old story about the pig in the poke...

Because the sound varies over a wide range from one speaker design to another the only smart way to buy them is by auditioning them in a store and being sure you are getting the sound quality you want. Granted the acoustics in most computer stores really suck, but it's going to give you a better idea than buying sight unseen.

It's a dirty trick, but once you have a make and model you like... shop for the best online price... at least you will know what you are getting.

If you want high quality speakers for under $200 you might want to forget about the stands (I assume you mean speaker-stands for the satelites). The after-market stands for my Klipsch 4.1's are $90 a pair. I've also seen contraptions for hanging the satelites from the ceiling, but these were a bit expensive too. And then there is always this solution, but that's getting a little extravagant. As far as the speakers go, I'd do what Teq said. Go to computer store and see which ones you like the best, then order them from newegg.
