i understand in the bios that the
bios aperture size is when the
graphics card uses sytem memory
when there isnt not memory on the
graphics card.

i have a 256MB of memory on my graphics card
so is it a good idea to disable the graphics
aperture size option? The reason for this i think
because i have enought memory on my graphics card
anyway & i do not want my system memory to be used
instead. am i right?

Keep the AGP Aperature size at 64mb, if you only have 256mb of system memory.

Depends on how much system memory--scottchen is right, if you have 256MB of sysmem, have your aperture be 64. You can scale accordingingly (i.e., 128 for 512, 256 for 1023+). What is your graphics card??

There is no reason to set it higher than 128 for any card other than 9700Pro, 9700np, 9800Pro, 9800XT, 9800np, 5900nu, 5900U, 5950U, or OC'd 9600s, 9500s, 5700s since the core processor will never need that much memory.

I've found the best performance at 128MB aperture size, regardless of RAM amount.

does that mean that with my sapphire 128meg 9600pro an aperture of 128 will give me optimum performance???

That means with your Riva TNT 16MB card, your Radeon DDR 32MB card, your GeForce3 Ti200 64MB card, and your Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB card, 128MB will likely be best.

I've seen various forumulas used to determine the "correct" amount for AGP aperture, and none of them has provided better results for me than simply setting it to 128MB.

I've had similar findings with one exception.
Never assign more than 1/4 of your system memory in your graphics apperature size or your system will probably slow down in programs that are both graphics and CPU intensive.

Your graphics apperature memory isn't dedicated.
If it's not being used by your graphics card, then the rest of your system will use it.
Therefore, games with large textures tend to take the biggest hit when assigning too much memory.

If you have 512Mb of system memory or more, 128 is the best.
If you have less, play around with it.

That said, it really doesn't make that much of a difference.
We're talking at most 2 frames, except for rare occasions when people try play Halo with 256Mb of system ram and a 128Mb graphics apperature size.

BTW, video memory generally has no bearing on this subject. 256Mb of Video ram just means the memory assigned to the graphics apperature will be free more often.

No card's fast enough to really utilize the full 256meg of video memory. So buying anything with more than 128megs of video memory is a major waste of cash.

Naturally I agree with that remark.
I was just relating how it would effect the assigned graphics aperature memory.
The memory would be free most of the time with 128Mb of video ram as well.

Extra video ram is only useful if you run your games at insane resolutions or if you play games with textures large enough to use the memory.
Currently no textures go beyond the capabilties of 128Mb of video ram.
