This build is better for a few reasons:
1) Stronger CPU
2) Stronger GPU
3) Uses 2x4gb ram sticks (duel channel) rather than the single 8gb stick.

I'm hoping to stay around $500.00 or less. Got a little bit of a budget. I'd just like a good gaming build at a reasonable price so I'm seeing what my options are.

$500 is cutting close and won't get you very good. That $600 build above is a decent system that you'd be happy with. Going with an APU based system, it's not a gaming system and you'd be running newer games at low/medium, have stutter, etc. That $600 build would get you into high/ultra settings. The 280 is a good card for the value.

Anything outdated or that needs an upgrade so far? This is off topic but considering I might be able to upgrade my current one as well as get the new build, I can do what I can =D

Since you have 8gb of ram in your current build here's my suggestion, take your ram and hdd from your current build then you won't need to purchase a new one with the build I suggested. That should get it around $500 if you want a build that will play modern games on high-ultra settings

To know what needs to be upgraded we'll need a list of the following components make/model:
Cpu
motherboard
video card
ram
hard drive
power supply

That cpu seems like it's due for an upgrade , the gpu is always a good upgrade if it's in the budget. It's important to know what motherboard you have as then we can assess whether to upgrade to a newer amd chip or switch to Intel such as the 4460

So far I'm actually working on upgrading or buying a new one for me, but the main thing I'm doing is trying to build a good one for my girlfriend. Hence the main thread idea. But to upgrade mine I'll go for that too haha. Is there a specific way I can get the info from those such as teh way I did with the other system information? Easier to just copy and paste.

If you go to your file explorer, right click on "My Computer" or "This PC" or whatever it is and click properties, it'll display your CPU and amount of RAM. To see what GPU you have go into device manager and look in "Display Adapters" if this doesn't work you can view your system's hardware in the bios.

The CPU yes, need to know PSU make/wattage to know if it's worth upgrading. And which video card you're using, also what frequency your RAM operates at. It seems like ram should be fine though
