Which Card, 970 vs 390?

Solution
I trust Nvidia a lot more than AMD. Why?

1) Nvidia brings out loads of driver updates to help improve performance and update features, etc.
2) Nvidia cards tend to be quieter, I don't like listening to fan noise.
3) Nvidia cards are normally cooler.
4) Nvidia cards use less power.
5) Nvidia cards have better performance and features.
6) Nvidia cards are brilliant for overclocking and even when overclocked are still very stable.

I have the Asus GTX 960 Strix and would have got the 970 if I had the money at the time, but in your situation I would get the 970. I would personally get either the Asus 970 or MSI version, ZOTAC cards aren't that good, EVGA is good though and so is Gigabyte.

Hope this helps :)

V-ram will not a problem for 970, as 3.5GB is still plenty for Skyrim @1080p and even @1440p. It is true, the r9 390 and the 970 will trade blows depending on the titles. The only titles I know of that will exceed that 3.5GB threshold by turning all the settings to ultra @1440p and cause a performance drop is Crysis3, Witcher3, and perhaps a few more. Unless you're a max settings or die kinda guy @1440p, the 970 would perform just fine. If you're doing crossfire in futuer, the r9 390 extra v-ram will be nice @1440p and beyond on aaa titles. So whichever one's cheaper or you prefer, you can't go wrong with either. Just make sure your psu is up for it.

The r9 290 would be worth a look as well, the r9 390 is basically the same gpu as the r9 290, just with double the v-ram and a couple of tweaks.
