Which card is best for me?

Ok so I'm looking for a graphics card that will get me all of the performance I need and want with my games. While I don't want to spend too much (like not above $400), I will go over if it will be worth it. I have considered waiting for the new 1000 series GTX cards, but I'm worried that the prices won't really be as good as they said in the press conference.

I'm looking at the MSI GTX 960 4GB OC, MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB, MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4GB, and possibly the MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB.

I would be willing to buy the 390 just for the 8GB alone, but don't want to spend that much if I can avoid it and also the clock speeds aren't that great... Could someone tell me what's more important for heavy modding: higher clock speeds or higher vram?

All of the clock speeds and such for the 960 and 970 are very close and the 960 is really cheap. The 980 is obviously superior but not really by as much as I thought. There are some specs other than the clock speeds, vram, etc that I don't know as much about like the memory interface that are much better on the 970 and 980. Do the decent clock speeds of the 960 4GB make up for the other lesser specs? Also do the included overclocking-friendly features trump the decent speeds of the 960?

The most demanding things I will be doing is playing Skyrim and Fallout 4 with really high quality mods (not necessarily 4k but definitely ENBs and such), also I want to play games like Witcher 3, Battlefield 1, and others on MAX or almost MAX settings. I'll also being starting with a 1080p monitor at 60hz and I MIGHT consider going up to 1440p or at least a higher frequency monitor in the future.

If the 960 4GB will be good for my needs, then I would really like to save the money. I'm getting a fairly high quality build, with total being around $1,400 last I checked. So bottle necking isn't a concern.

Thanks!

Certainly the MSI 980 4gb is below the 400 USD mark and would give you what you need BUT given how insane is the performance of the 1080, you might want to wait to check what the 1060 and 1070 has to offer. As for the price tag, they shouldnt be too expensive as they come to replace the corresponding cards 970 and 960.

Buying new would make no sense you can get a 970 for $200 on ebay if you want a card right now.

i would wait for 1070 tho.

and for 1400 build you definitely can afford to put in a 1070 in there even prob 1080.

See easy

Mostly it depends on your current gaming setup. Can you OC your CPU and GPU to buy you a coupla more months of decent gaming? Do you game on 1080p or are you itching to go 1440p+?

With the new 1070/60s on the way out you may as well wait and see how they benchmark. However buying a used 980TI/nonTI for cheap is definitely a solid option if you want to go that route.

Are you the actual Vae Victus? Doubt it but would be cool. Also I don't currently have a gaming rig. I probably should of posted my build here so people would know what I'm planning. I'm not against buying used but I'm just worried about getting a card that was mistreated/damaged in anyway. It would be ideal if I could find a near new card used otherwise I would never do that. I have no problem sticking to 1080p for the cheaper prices and better performance alone, but idk I might want to get into 1440p in 1 or 2 years

The 980 I was looking at was like $430 or $450, I really want to avoid spending that much if possible plus I'm not even gaming on a very high quality monitor at first, just something to get me off the ground. I'll post my build as it stands now though. I've ordered the CPU already and the next part I want to grab is the graphics card so that's why I'm looking for answers on this thread. Are they releasing a 1060? sounds like exactly what I need at the moment and I hope the wait wouldn't be too long if it is coming out. Also I've only been able to see the founder's edition on newegg, which I don't want because it's way more expensive...

My build as it stands so far. Ignore video card that's on there for now as that's what I'm trying to finalize. I've already ordered my CPU and have it now. Next part to get is the graphics card unless I'm waiting for the 1070 or 1060(?).
