Community,

I am upgrading my GPU and I wanted to get the group’s opinion on what card to purchase. I currently run a GTX 570, but want something that can utilize the upcoming G-synch monitors. I am going to be playing games on a 1920x1080 monitor (g-synch when it is available) . I do have a dual monitor setup, but I only play games on one monitor (I use the other monitor for home office purposes only).
Here are my options, going with a PNY:
GTX 780 – 3 GB

GTX 770 – 4 GB

GTX 770 – 2 GB

I know it is impossible to future proof your system, but I would like the upcoming card to last for a good 3 years with a 1920x1080 resolution in mind.

Is there a noticeable difference in performance between the 780 and the 770 series at this resolution? Is there any benefit to the 770 4gb setup... can the 4 gb even be utilized at this point?

Here are my hardware specs:
CPU: i5 2500 – Quad Core 3.3 GHZ
Mother Board – Gigabyte GA-Z68x
Memory – 16 GB DDR3
GPU – GTX 570
PSU – 750 Watt
Hard Drive – 40 GB SSD Smart Response Drive (Cache), 1 TB Western Digital 6/gb sec

Ik you've already probably bought the card, but just saying(if you haven't used it yet), next gen games will require at least 2 gb VRAM in their reccomended settings. Like watch dogs for example, it requires 2gb for smooth fps. Future games...
Id go with the 780.
No the 770 will not utilize the 4gb, its more for marketing than anything else.
770 (or was it the 760?) is just a repackaging of the 680.
If u have the budget for 780, go for it.
I might be concerned that ur cpu might bottleneck it just a bit.
Some minor oc might give u better performance

go for the 7702gb or 780. at 1080p you won't need the extra ram. Can't speak for the future of course. At this res there isn't much difference between the cards as the 760 is really enough for most games. But for longevity of course the 780 is going to give you the longest life.

Thank you for the quick responses! After looking at the comments and seeing the benchmarks I have decided to go with the GTX 770 2 Gb.

While I love the performance of the GTX 780, there is just not enough of a difference with the 770 to warrant the $180 difference in price. My future system will run games at 1080 resolution on a single monitor... I think that the 770 will be more than sufficient to meet my gaming needs over the next 2-3 years.

Thank you again for everyone's feedback.

It's just my reccomendation, but whatever floats your boat..

It is funny that you posted this just now, as I ultimately did end up buying GTX 770 4Gb!

I read an article reviewing the 4 GB version and it made the same point as you Kakorat: that while 2 Gb is the limit for most games now, it is very possible that over the next couple of years the amount of RAM could easily go up. If I am going to drop the money on a high performance card, why not spend the extra $30-40 bucks and get the 4 Gb and future proof my system?

I bought the overclocked PNY version:

Nice! It wil last you maybe 3-4 years before you might need to SLI it, or maybe replace depending on which type of games come out then.
