Hey guys!

Buying my first mechanical keyboard in the next week or so quite excited! Just wanted a little help with some advice on switches. How do the Cherry MX Reds perform? I'm going to be using it for quite a wide range of uses, gaming on my PC in things like Battlefield, DayZ and Skyrim, but I'll also be using the keyboard for things like school work and I'm also starting to learn to code as well.

If I were to purchase a keyboard with the MX Reds would it be suitable for typing, I know the blues are most ideal for typing, but obviously do not have the space nor the money to purchase a red and a blue keyboard. If I got the reds would I have any issues with typing? I've used laptops my entire life, the current PC that I built is really my first desktop so I've never really known typing outside of the cheap rubber dome keyboards. Ideally I would love the Corsair K95 but I hear it only comes in the cherry mx red switch, would it be wiser to get the K70 with a blue switch, or can I just make do with red switches for typing?

Thanks for your input guys,

Jack :)

I have the blackwidow keyboard with blue switches, odd because I found the reds to sensitive ? I have the habit of resting my fingers on the keys while gaming, tested a few brands and then found the blackwidow 2013 keyboards blue swithches, I think all these keyboards with switches are over priced really, but so is everything else people really want, for me the blue switches are perfect and I also love the tactile feedback/click, I could never go back to an rubber domed keyboard put it that way. two things I make sure I have these days and that's top quality mouse and keyboard (oh the mouse I have is the roccat Kone KTD), the feel of high end keyboards and mice is much better experience, i've had the cheap £9.99 keyboards and mice back...
First off. Its a VERY specific personal preference.
You can learn each ones features and strengths to compare. But you will not know what you prefer till you try.

Here is a nice article that explains it well.

Red switches are loud when typing and will take quite a bit more effort to press than blues.
But as long as you are not typing massive amounts of articles, you will not notice the difference.

p.s sozz about long edit

Yeah, can't wait to get one! Absolutely fed up of this cheap keyboard I'm currently using!

Maybe I should go with the reds then? I live in Australia and there's only one shop near me, I won't be able to try all of the keys, I'm assuming reds cause more typos because they require less force to push right? I don't think I'll do massive amounts of typing it's probably 80% gaming 20% typing possibly even more gaming. I'm just worried I'll get the wrong switch and have no chance of being able to program on it.

sorry, but reds (mine are not loud) are more similar to black but requires less pressure to actuate.

blue and browns are more similar, they have tactile feedback (nice feel when typing), they tend to be louder than the other 2.
what i have, blue (loud but nice feedback) and red (no tactile, not loud). i was looking for brown but could not find it anywhere when i was looking (about a month ago)

i got reds, and they are nice.
personally, i think brown is the perfect compromise among all 4 switches.
i have ducky by the way, 9087 white led red switch

In that case, the reds are a good choice. Keep in mind that they are very sensitive.
