Which configuration to choose

Hello,

I want to build a system for Virtualization and Application testing, should I go with i7 6700K with Asus Z170- Deluxe or i7 5820K with Asus X99-Deluxe with ASUS GTX750TI-OC-2GD5 display card. The system will not be used for gaming.

Budget is not a issue, I will be running 5-6 VM simultaneously with 2 Gb Ram per VM. My main concern is system stability as the system will be running for around 15-18 hours daily.

If budget is not the issue, how about i7 5930k, X99 mobo and 4x8GB DDR4 RAM (you still have 4 free slots, just in case you need them)

I can't speak for other virtualisation platforms, but VMware directly mirrors the physical and virtual resources. In other words, a single-core VM will utilise one thread on the physical CPU, so with five VMs running, you're going to need at least six threads on the physical CPU (one thread needs to be set aside for the host computer). The same applies to RAM; 2GB for five VMs means that you'll need at least 12GB.

@bicycle_repair_man: that is why, I think, 2011 platform should fit better.

BTW: have you seen to those 2011 server solutions? There are processor with more cores/threads e.g. E5-2699V3. If you set each virtual PC to have 2 cores, you will need 10-12 threads for 5 machines.

Sadly, the best my enterprise has is an E5-2650, which isn't too shabby, but the bosses, like a lot of others, don't want to spend money on IT.

The 5820K is both cheaper and more capable than the 6700K. It's a no brainer if you ask me.

12 CPU threads always beat 8 CPU threads, even if those 8 are 0-5% faster.
