Hello Everyone!

I’m here looking for some advice on which CPU I should upgrade to as I’m not sure which would make the most sense. Here’s my current build.
  • I5-8600
  • Asus b360-I MB
  • 2070 super
  • 32gb ddr4 3200
  • Corsair h60 aio
  • Nzxt h510i case
  • Samsung nvme SSD 250gb
I currently play games like Fortnite and Overwatch and can hit 240 FPS or over but my CPU usage is always near 85-95+ percent when playing. I revived a 240hz monitor as a gift and want to utilize it.

I was thinking of either getting a i7-9700k or i9-9900k to keep the same motherboard but can’t overclock and my ram can’t run at its highest speed. The other plan is going for a i5-10600k with a new Mobo so I can OC it. My budget is about $500 so either would work. Thank you for all suggestions!!

There's absolutely no difference between 40% usage and 85% usage to a cpu. Usage is not how much of the cpu is used, but how much resources the cpu uses. Slight difference.

The cpu always runs at 100% ability, it's going to give you every frame it can possibly give, the 85% is just how much bandwidth, thread count, IPC, cache etc that it has to use in order to complete 1 frame. Doesn't matter at all if the cpu needs to use 20,40,85% of the resources to do so. It'll still complete the frame in exactly the same amount of time.

The only time cpu usage matters is when approaching 100% usage. Hit that number and the cpu has to wait for availability of resources to continue, which takes the cpu longer to complete a frame, which reduces the amount of frames in 1 second, or fps.

If you aren't hitting 100%, you don't need upgrade.

If you are hitting 100%, the only upgrades are i7-8700k, I7-9700k or i9-9900k/s/f. And that'll depend on your motherboard.

Honestly, your second choice will be better, a 10600k and new mobo. It's what the I7-9700k should have been in the first place, without the power sink of the 9900k.

The extra cores will not be used much if your gaming
A 10600k or 10700k would do perfectly
IPC and transistor density is way higher on the 10700k so you would get betetr preformance
The cpu doesn't do everything when gaming, it tends to be the gpu, but 95% usage is pretty high.
Since your usage is pretty high, you play cpu intensive games, where core count isn't everything, high frequency and good ipc will be more effective than a 9900k even though it has more cores. If you have the money, go for a 10900k if you want, but a 10700k will be a great choice.

i would reccomend going for an amd cpu: they can deliver the same performence for cheaper!
go with the ryzen 7 3700x and b550 mobo its about 450 bucks
