Hey guys, just thinking about which CPU would is the better option for a pure gaming rig.

The i5-3570k overclocked to at least 4.5GHz

or

The AMD FX-8350.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

are ANY games made to make the most of 8 cores? Seems a bit like overkill to me!

Not overkill; the next-gen consoles are all eight-core, so the games will soon be much more likely to be threaded for eight cores, which the 8350 will do much better than the 3570k.

crycsis 3 uses 9 threads. (maybe BF3 too not sure).

and you are also forgetting 8350 will also OK :)

if you stream your gamings, 8350 will definitely help due to its extra cores

As stated by danny, the 3570k would be better, at the moment though. For long term you are going to eventually need 8 cores for next gen games. If you are planning on keeping this setup for a long time then the 8350 would be a better bet, at the moment the 3570k is better. So its up to if you need long term or now. Plus overclock-ability is nice for the 8350.

But the 3570k can be OCed as well, so I wouldn't use that argument.

I have no experience with AMD OCing, but I will say the IB OCing is not the most difficult thing on the planet. :)
