Which cpu is better

Solution

How would the i5 offer a better upgrade path? AM4 is going to be supported through 2020, Intel typically uses a new chipset/ motherboard for every generation. Going with a R5 2600 and decent AM4 motherboard would give the OP the upgrade path of Zen 2 when it releases in ~6 months. Really you just can't go wrong with Ryzen right now. The R5 2600 would be a great build, will offer 12 threads of performance and...
Well for right now, I'd recommend Ryzen for the price to performance.

However, the i5 offers better options for CPU upgrades in the future. This comes at a higher price, of course.

What is your budget?

What resolution is your display?

What special tech classes will this be used for (eg. programming, 3D modeling, etc)?

All the current information we have from AMD is that they will support AM4 through 2020. Zen 2 is set for 2019 release, probably around June so AM4 will support Zen 2. AMD will more than likely release X570 and B570 motherboards that have some optimizations over X470 and B470 just like when we went from Ryzen to Ryzen plus. X370 and B370 motherboards still support Ryzen plus however X470 and B470 motherboards have better optimizations. From what I have heard the X570 and B570 motherboards are supposed to have support for PCIe Gen4.

While it is possible that Zen 2 Plus (or whatever they call fourth generation Zen) may require a new chipset/ motherboard, likely called AM4+ or something like that, Zen 2 is set to be on AM4. In short AM4 has a very good upgrade path, much better than anything Intel has as IF, and that is a big if, they release 10nm by the end of 2019 they will surely require a new chipset/ motherboard.
