I currently have a Ryzen 7 1700x on a Asus prime x370-pro mobo with 32BG 2666 ram (8GBx4) with a AMD 6700XT 12GB GPU. I am running 2 monitors. Main monitor is a 27" LG 1440p 165hz w/freesync and g-sync. The second is a Dell 1080p 60hz. I just recently discovered that my x370 has a BIOS update that will allow me to upgrade to a Ryzen 5000 series CPU. I'm looking at a 5700x, 5700x3d, or a 5800x3d. I know the 5700x3d is the newest chip in the series but it's also going in an older board.

I also would like to upgrade to faster ram but the compatibility list on ASUS site makes it hard to find the exact ram sticks that are compatible with my board. I know that with the bios update and chipset update I should be able to find a bigger variety to pick from but the only updated list is for Ryzen 2000 series CPU's.

You will find all kinds of reviews comparing 5700x3d and 5800x3d. The 5700x3d might be newer but it less powerful. It also is cheaper.

If gaming is your main use everything you will find says you should use the 5800x3d...nothing beats it that will fit in your socket.

I would try it with your current memory. In general faster memory is not going to make a huge difference. The problem with QVL lists is they don't update them much after a couple years. Maybe the memory vendor has a list that is newer. If you do swap it out I would go with 16gb x 2. The memory controllers tend to support much higher speeds with only 2 sticks of memory.

The age of your motherboard isn't an issue, i run my 5800x3d on a X370 board as well. For gaming either one of the X3D models will do fine, choice imo just depends on what you want to spend, the 5800X3D will be abit better, as said check some reviews about the 5700X3D.

Make sure you have a decent cpu cooler.

For ram would i just test with what you have 2666mhz isn't that bad. Yes you will see performance uplift on faster ram, but you have to consider the cost for maybe a few fps. Might want to look into if you can overclock your current ram a little.

G.Skill Ripjaws 3600Mhz CL16 - https://pcpartpicker.com/product/zc...2-x-16-gb-ddr4-3600-memory-f4-3600c16d-32gvkc
G.Skill Trident Z Neo 4000Mhz CL18 - https://pcpartpicker.com/product/f9...6-gb-ddr4-4000-cl18-memory-f4-4000c18d-32gtzn

I think the Trident is the better choice.

The 5700X3D is not as fast as the 5800X3D but you have to pay a big price for the extra performance. Take the 5700. It's enough.

Are you sure the 5700X3D is specifically listed as compatible ? Just checking. The 5800X3D is, and i'm not sure about the 5700

Good CPU coolers for you are: Thrmalright's Peerless Assassin or Phantom Spirit EVO, DeepCool AK620, beQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 5, Scythe Mugen 6, Noctua NH-D15.
Check the PC case manual for CPU cooler clearance, and check the cooler specs for RAM clearance. The Trident RAM sticks are pretty tall.

At my local microcenter the 5700X3D is on sale for $189 and the 5800X3D is on sale for $299. The reviews are kinda back and forth. Either one would be a huge upgrade from the 1700x. I think I might be leaning toward the 5700X3D since its over $100 less.

AS for my cpu cooler I have the Cryorig H7 quad lumi. It's supposed to have a 140w TDP so I think it will be ok. If not I have another set of fan brackets to do a push pull setup on the cooler.
