You have to have a router someplace in your house. A router logically is a wired router chip, a switch chip for the lan, and a couple wifi radio chips. The AP is just the wifi radio chip part. There is not a significant difference in wifi performance.

Your ISP device is a router.

You can then add an wifi access device OR like most ISPs now have the wireless built into their DSL, Fiber, cable modem (the router).. so no need to get another one unless you really want to. IF the ISP device does not have one there is more then a few good ones out there. just make sure they have dual band 2.4 and 5G wifi like this one.. and that they have MU-MIMO as they are better.. normally they will have at least MIMO and that is good enough. NOW if you are doing it for a business I would just go with for example the "Ubiquiti Networks" stuff as they have good wireless stuff.
