Which display for my 9800 pro?

I'm a first time poster here and I've got a few questions for the tech savvy. I just ordered a computer with the ati radeon (128mb) 9800 pro and am planning on buying some sort of display that would match up well in terms of gaming. I say "some sort of display" because I can't seem to find what "dvi" is but I know the card supports it. I'm also new to the whole flat panel lcd type of monitors so whether I should get one of these is up in the air. I've done some research to try and find the answers myself but have come up short. In case it matters I would like to spend under 500 bucks on the monitor (actually I'd like to spend less than that but don't want something that isn't worthy of what the card can do). Any help/ suggestions would be appreciated.

Get a BIG CRT (tube) if you want to spend less than $500.

Some suggestions;

CRT

19" Phillips 109B

21" Phillips 201B

21" Samsung 1100P+

21" Sony G520P

21" Viewsonic G220F

22" Phillips 202P4

Those are pretty much the best in the Industry (IBM does have some nice monitors too, but they are Sony's with some additional features, and they are expensive).

If you would like to go with an LCD, then I would suggest looking at the Samsung SyncMaster 191N or 192T, one of the best LCD monitor makers out there IMO. Also the NEC 1860NX is a good LCD. Benq also used to be a great LCD maker, they were bought by (ACER IIRC) and their quality may have changed in recent history.

Also DVI is D-igital V-ideo I-nterface. They are usually used to connect LCD monitors, and drive the LCD with a digital signal that is not converted to analog and then back again unlike the VGA D-sub 15pin connectors. This usually makes the picture's quality truer. Whether you can tell the difference depends on the person (and also the CRT and LCD being used to compare).

Anywoo, that's my two frames worth.

That's good advice GrapeApe. If you are looking for an LCD, which tend to consume less power, weigh less, and take up less space, there are many out there to choose from. But, they're more expensive. It just depends on what you prefer. LCD's can have problems with "ghosting" (image blurring) in games and movies. A big CRT would work well, or a smaller LCD (17") would do fine too. Right now I use an NEC multisync 1760v (~$400) and it is great for gaming and very bright. My old 17" CRT doesn't even compare to this NEC. So, my advice to you would be to read some THG articles in the Display Guide section and figure out what fits your needs.

Just wanted to thank the two posters that steered me in the right direction. It looks like I'm going to go with a 19 inch CRT (viewsonic p95+) as I've found that there are considerable drawbacks to a flat panel dvi monitor, namely, the issue with resolutions, dead pixels, ghosting and price. I guess the initial confusion I had was related to the dvi function of the video card and wanting to use all the cards functionalities, thus I wanted a dvi monitor. As you guys noted, however, it's not that sraight forward. I can definetely appreciate what my card can do with a quality CRT. Thanks again.

Samsung's CRT monitors have the best picture, buy the best one you can afford.

Seems like the ultrasharps are their hot sellers. They currently have a sale running on their entire line of monitors but it only applies on some of the ultrasharps:

UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1-inch $749.25 (You Save $249.75)
UltraSharp 1901FP 19-inch $535.96 (You Save $135.80)
UltraSharp 1800FP 18-inch $579.00
UltraSharp 1703FP 17-inch $529.

Of course I'd be interested in hearing what your contact can do. My email address is cecrain at pacbell.net. Thanks.
