[SOLVED] Which drive is best choice for Boot Drive?

I am running Asus Maximus hero with i7 9770k CPU 32GB DDR4 3000 Nvidia 1060 6GB GPU. I have 2 nvme drives 1 is samsung 970 evo pro 1tb [boot drive] the other is samsung 980 pro 2tb [system drive] would it be better to put 980 as boot drive? benchmark tells me 980 pro working below capabilities.

That has 2x M.2 ports, both PCIe 3.0 x4.
The 980 Pro is a PCIe 4.0 .

It will never reach its actual 4.0 performance.

Still trying to figure out what a Samsung 970 Evo Pro 1Tb is...

With a pcie3.0 interface, neither will be better, both will run the same. The 980 is a 970 on steroids, but only when it has room to stretch its legs, and for gaming or other multiple small file uses, it's wearing shackles, the pcie3.0 just adds balls to the chains. The 980's real advantage is in Large file transfers, like real estate or other legal documents or books or backing up the entire game, not just the save files.

It ain't broke, there's no advantage to a change, pointless to potentially muck up or loose data trying.

The 970 as boot does have a major advantage though, 1Tb drives will wear out faster than 2Tb drives given the same amount of use/abuse. Considering the replacement cost, I'd much rather occasionally maybe replace a 1Tb, than a 980 Pro 2Tb.

Just running benchmarks it looks good but has nothing to do with real world performance.

Has 2 other pcie x16 slots. You can get a bumper card for $12, adds another m.2 slot through the chipset. Asus even makes a pcie Gen4 x4 card that fits in pcie x16 slot. $80 for 4x more NVMe.

Me too lol. But figuring on human nature, ppl don't add smaller drives generally. I'm betting Op had 2 970's then added the 980 later, requiring the bumper card. And now he's wondering whether to swap the 980 off the card and stick it on the board as boot, putting the 970 on the card instead.
