I need a new ethernet cable, and I thought it would be as simple as just ordering from Amazon and being done with it. I am perplexed by the different brands and the reviews for each cable. The cable I have now has lasted for over ten years... one of the plugs has gotten too loose to keep the connection properly. I would appreciate any suggestions and links to a cable that is likely to last more than 6 months. Seeking Cat 6 cable. Round, flat, does not matter as long as it can last for a while. Thank you!

Amazon has a great brand. I don’t know what you’re doing to wear out your cables but I’ve never had one where out

You don’t need cat 6 either. Here’s an example of what is good

IMHO, flat cables of any type, are less durable than round ones, based on my experiences with them...

This stems from the fact that most of the flat ones I have seen have very minimal/thinner outer coverings as compared to round ones, which also means less room for shielding too, so if you run them in places where there is a fair amount of RF/microwave/cellular signals bouncing around, you will get connection and/or speed issues.

They may allow you to fit them into really, really tight spaces better than round ones, but ya gotta be extremely careful when routing them thru walls, studs of floors etc....

So my advice would be to invest in some high quality, well shielded cat 6 cables with relatively heavy exterior covering... and yes I said CAT 6, 'cause you will need them sooner or later due to the ever increasing bandwidth requirements of everything internet related :) They may not be absolutely necessary ATM, but Cat 5's end of life IS nearer than most people realize !
