Hey all,

FX8350
GTX 980
16gb RAM

Looking to get a new monitor. I currently have an AOC G2460PF 144Hz 24.0" Monitor. I'd like to upgrade to a G-Sync model with higher resolution since I recently upgraded to the GTX 980

I'm stuck on a couple of options for about the same price.

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/acer-monitor-umpb0aa001 - Acer XB280HK bprz (only 60hz but almost 4k 3840x2160)

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-monitor-90lm00u0b01370 - Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q 144hz (although lower res @ 1440, it's 144hz) - Do I need 144hz with a single GTX980? I don't plan to get another 980 to SLI)

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/acer-monitor-xb270hubprz - Acer XB270HU bprz 144Hz 27.0" Monitor (still 1440 and 144hx, but also an IPS display)

Any other options I'm missing? I really only play games. No art, no video editing, etc.

Please assist! Thanks!

Solution
Getting an IPS panel was the best choice. No need for the 144hz. I'm using an Asus 27" with IPS ands I love it. Also using it with a GTX 970.
I wouldn't recommend getting an 144hz monitor, I don't think a single 980 will be able to output 144hz on most games at ultra 1440p, so It will be a waste, and on cpu-intensive games, your processor won't be able to either. A 60hz 1440p should work fine.

depends--if you want everything at ultra then there will be games where at 2560 x 1440 a gtx980 wont maintain 60fps

so g-sync would be useful

but if happy to play with the settings slightly lower or dont play the most demanding games then g-sync would be an extra cost that you dont really need

So in the end, if I don't plan on SLI with a single gtx980 there is no point going for a 144hz monitor on 1440p. If I want ultra settings and gsync I just as well get a 144hz 1080p monitor and save some bucks right?

only my opinion dont think its one of those questions where theres only 1 right answer

i had the same kind of choice--single gtx970 though heavily overclocked

i went with 27 inch as had 24 and just seemed that bit too small

i went with ips--definitely far better colour than my old tn panel

last choice was either higher resolution or higher refresh rate--personally i didnt like 1080p on a 27 monitor--went in pc shop and had a look at various monitors to help me decide

so i went 60hz but 2560 x 1440

and have to say happy with the choice i made its really sharp

but theres always the will you be upgrading your gpu any time soon? as the new pascal cards may change what 1 card can run

as i said dont think theres a this is right thats wrong answer its down to what you are happy to spend and which features will suit you as what suits me may be different from what suits you

I just broke down and ordered the Acer XB270HU bprz 27" G-Sync 144Hz because it was $100 off. It might be overkill but I'm preparing myself for when the GTX 1000 series arrives!

Thanks for all the help!

Good choice. I bought the same monitor, just waiting on it to arrive. Lets hope the QA issues with these monitors are overblown.

I got mine today. It is a beast of a monitor as expected. Using 144hz over 60hz is a surprisingly noticeable upgrade. I have some minor bleed on the lower right corner. At least my sample is decent, hope the OPs is too.

I started a new game of Skyrim the other day to get a good before/after of the monitor upgrade. Turns out Skyrim doesn't like anything over 60.

Glad you like it. Mine's a week away probably.

Skyrim uses the same engine as Fallout (Creation Engine, which is based on the Gamebryo engine) It forces V-Sync which will limit you to 60fps.

If you go into the Nvidia Control Panel / Manage 3D settings / Global Settings -> Vertical Sync set to OFF. It should stop the game forcing it on and you should then be OK.

I tried that already. Seems like the only thing that works is setting the refresh rate to 60hz before playing it. I've read using a FPS limiter can work as well. I use bandicam and it has one built in but I haven't tried it yet.

The problem is the physics engine breaks, objects and mobs freak out. Invisible barriers are erected, flying cabbages cause brain damage. Vsync is indeed enabled, but it is set to 144hz, that is what breaks it (anything over 60). There is an option in the control panel for 'prefered refresh rate' I set it to 'application controlled' but it still sets it to 144hz. Guess it doesn't explicitly say what refresh rate it wants just that it wants vsync on. Perhaps there were no 144hz screens out when Skyrim was released.

Likely not. 2011...

I did what I said for Fallout 4 and it worked. But you should try picking locks now! It's like lightening lock picking and you can't do it in a controlled way. It's quite funny, LOL

Just curious here.....
I have a great Asus 27" monitor. It was very expensive a couple of years ago, before all of this 144hz stuff began. I use it with a GTX970, and I don't over clock at all. I get well over 100fps and the picture is so good I hardly expect that it could get better. So....My question: Someone in here said, that going to a 144hz monitor was a very noticeable upgrade. i'd just like to know, exactly what did it do for you? More FPS? Better Picture? Now you win more games because your faster? etc. Would you kindly let me know, because I have give a lot of thought to getting a 144hz monitor and I talked myself out of it because I just didn't think the bang for the buck would be there...... am i wrong? The monitor I'd have gotten would have been the Asus PG279Q.

Received my Acer XB270HU bprz a couple of weeks back. Been loving it so much I didn't get around to reporting back!

Mine has a production date of October 2015. There is a tiny bit of bleed on blacks but nothing to moan about. Other than that, WOW! I've only managed to play Fallout 4 so far, but at 1440p, ultra settings at an avg of 80 fps on my GTX 980. Along with the color that this ips monitor spits out is astounding. Never has the wasteland looked so beautiful!

This is the best upgrade to my pc I've made in I don't know how long. I was using a 24" AOC 144hz before which isn't shabby.

Anyone thinking about the investment, although pricey, is well worth it in my opinion. I just hope now, she's not going to want a divorce through absence!
