Hello all,

So I'm just about to order a Gaming Laptop which will be for College use and the occasional gaming session when I couldn't decide between the two. There is very little difference and very little price difference so I'm very stuck.

Original choice was https://www.ebuyer.com/827234-msi-gl62mvr-7rfx-1060-gam...

New option was this https://www.ebuyer.com/826540-msi-gl72m-7rex-1050ti-gam...

Now I don't need best performance of rother tasks or anything because I have an i7 6700K/1080 Desktop at home, so I'd purely be using it for college work and gaming on campus. Can anyone give some insight onto which I should buyt as some say the 1060 but only at higher resolutions, which should I get and why? Many thanks all! :)

That is a fair option yes. To it's favour the 1060 version is also slightly cheaper so just pickup a 500GB, 1TB or whatever you need external drive and although they are slower than internal SATA drives, is fine for games with just slightly longer load times.

I'd personally take the 1050 Ti model. The 1060 3GB may be a stronger GPU (excluding less VRAM) but the 1060 model also has a smaller screen and no HDD which is the main concern. The 1050 Ti model has 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD which is a great amount of storage for fast boot and plenty of space for games. The 1060 model only has a single 250GB SDD which i imagine will be an issue once you start installing some games and programs. You can of course upgrade yourself but doesn't seem worth it to me. But with the things i've mentioned it's really your choice. Slightly stronger Graphics Card vs 1TB HDD / Bigger Screen (unless this is a negative to you for portability) and as you stated, more powerful GPU isn't a huge interest with your stronger build at home. A 1050 Ti is more than enough for casual Gaming on campus. Hope this helps with your decision! :)

Thanks for the great reply! What is the difference I'd get with the 1060 vs 1050 Ti? I'm just considering whether I'd take the extra performance VS the upgrades mainly, thanks!

About 50-60% on average. If you start hitting the 3GB VRAM limit though the 1060's lead can start to diminish so depends on the game, but this isn't a common factor. If you would straight up prefer performance then the ROG is probably off the board. It's GPU is weaker than both the MSI laptops you listed (Going from 1060 > 1050 Ti > standard 1050 in the ROG).

If I don’t mind an external drive then should I go for the 1060? It also has an IPS panel which is a panel I use and love on my desktop at 4K, and I’m not sure on difference on screen size.
