Hey guys. Long time reader, first time poster!

I'm not a big time gamer, but Id o enjoy the occasional Football Manager or Civilization every now and then. Wouldn't say no to some Sims either.

The laptops I have in mind are listed below. Which would perform better in your opinion?

Acer Aspire V5
-----------------------
CPU: Intel Core i7 4500U 1.80GHz up to 3.00 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 4GB
RAM: 8 gb DDR 3
Screen: 15.6" / TFT LED-backlit LCD / 1366x768

Lenovo IdeaPad Z5070
--------------------------------
CPU: Intel Core i7 4510U 2.00GHz up to 3.10 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 840M 4GB
RAM: 16 gb DDR3
Screen: 15.6" / TFT LED-backlit LCD / Full HD 1920x1080

The Acer has a GPU that is about 10 - 15% more powerful, but the screen resolution would be a deal breaker for me. A 1080p screen (1920 x 1080) is manditory for a good laptop experience, in my opinion.

If you multitask and use multiple windows on your screen, the 1366 x 768 resolution is very difficult to use. Also, the faster GPU on a lower resolution screen is almost wasted (in my opinion).

Of course, keep in mind that particular Lenovo comes with the now infamous Superfish add on program ( http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product_security/superfish ).

Given the two options, I would choose the Lenovo and run the Superfish unistaller on it ASAP.

My budget is about $800, but I live in Iran therefore I don't have access to a wide range of laptops, including the Acer Aspire V17 you just linked VicVega1 🙁

I don't think you can buy laptops with that kind of specs for 800$. Unless you're buiyng used/refubrished, I believe their price tag is closer to 1000$. I could be wrong, but those laptops look more expensive to me.

The Acer is 24,000,000 Rials and the Lenovo is 29,000,000 Rials, (1 dollar = 35000 Rials). Those are the prices in Iran anyway. From your comment I'm assuming the price tags are decent.

Given that you arent much of a gamer, I would be going for the Lenovo, much nicer laptop.

The Acer will perform slightly better in games, but to be honest, nither of them are "gaming laptops" so dont expect much.

My thoughts exactly.

The 840M uses DDR3 VRAM whereas the 750M can be either DDR3 or GDDR5, so you need to ascertain exactly what you're getting with the Acer. GDDR5 will offer a substantial improvement over DDR3.

Both processors are dual-core with Hyper-Threading, so that's another consideration. These processors are typically found in what Intel call Ultrabooks, which are designed for portability and all-day battery life, not intensive tasks such as gaming.

If the 750M in the Acer uses GDDR5 VRAM, then that would certainly be the one to buy, but, like RobCrezz said, neither one is a gaming laptop.

Exactly, all depends on prioritys.

I totally agree with your points about the 750m potentially using GDDR5, being much better gaming performance. But if the 840m in the lenovo is sufficient, then its probably the nicer laptop to own. But this is opinion, I have found Acer laptops feel cheaply made, but Lenovo is good quality.
