Which GPU for the price? RTX 2060 base or 2070 on special?

Hey guys,

First time poster so go easy haha.

I've got a dilemma, looking at high refresh rate 1080P gaming with 1440P in the future.
Sold my old GTX 1060 6GB and in the look for a new GPU.

Currently in Australia, I could purchase an EVGA XC Ultra Gaming 2060 for $660 OR $475 USD (mostly want EVGA for their amazing warranty service, though could by a Gigabyte OC version for $600 or $430 USD)

Otherwise I can purchase a Galax EX 2070 for $700 ($503 USD) which is on a special deal at the moment, normally retails for $800. ($575 USD)

My questions are:

1. Should I just buy a 2060 and OC it to reach GTX 1080 levels which is near 2070 performance?
2. Should I spend $40 more for the 2070 and simply OC that as I was planning anyway?
3. Does the addition 2GB of VRAM really help that much? I don't see it doing much at 1080P/1440P
3. How does Galax fair as a brand? There's not too much info about them for RMA's.

EDIT: I also have a GSYNC monitor, so FPS fluctuation under 144 isn't a huge deal for me. More a concern about future proofing and saving a need for upgrading later on.

Any advise or input is appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Hi :)

My answer largely depends on the fact that you mentioned you currently have 1080p & wish to upgrade to 1440p in the future.

1. No

2. Yes, spending $40 extra to get an entirely different tier of card is most certainly worth it. Im guessing the 2060 pricing is a bit skewed in your country thats why the 2060 is so close to 2070.

3. Yes, there are currently loads of games already utilising 6GB+ & the higher resolution you go the more youll need. Im not saying 6GB isnt enough to play games, im looking out for your future plans as detailed in your post. I recently played Resident Evil 2 remastered at 1440p max settings & reached 8GB easily ;)

The 2060 is a great card for high refresh rate 1080p & 60FPS 1440p with settings tweaked...

As indicated, I'm in Australia Rob so with the conversion and a little price increase because they hate us, it's a little different. Haha

Ugh . . that's a tough call - I don't know much about Galax. They may be very good, may not. EVGA, though, from what I've read, is superb when it comes to warranties.

That said - I think you have to sort of figure out if you want higher resolution, or high refresh rates. I think the 2060 will do pretty well for reasonably high refresh rates at 1080p, but once you move up to 1440, well, I am pretty certain on average the 2060 will do better than 60fps in almost all games, but I would guesstimate that it won't often hit 100fps.

I'm on the slightly paranoid side, though, so, if I were making this decision, I'd likely give up some performance for the better warranty. But it's a matter of whether you are really aiming for that higher resolution and refresh rate.

And damn, sucks about how crazy the prices are in AU... yikes!

The 2060 is a great card for high refresh rate 1080p & 60FPS 1440p with settings tweaked. If you upgrade your monitor to 1440p surely you arent going to upgrade to a 1440p 60Hz monitor right? Yourre going to get a 1440p 144hz monitor & with a 2060 you wont come close to that refresh rates unless you play esports games like CSGO, Rainbow Six Siege. Even the 2070 cant do 144fps in AAA games at 1440p & I usually get about 80-120 depending on the game (not counting esports games). The 2070 just makes more sense given your future plans & will help you going forward with 1440p 60FPS+, whereas the 2060 is a 1440p 60FPS card (many games will even require some tweaking to get 60FPS)

Ive seen some comments about Galax in the thread. Ive owned a Galax card & never had any problems. Galax & Zotac are very popular in my country largely due to their pricing.

Remember that Galax are responsible for the infamous Galax 'Hall of Fame' (HOF) cards which were big in the overclocking scene.

Spend an extra $40 to upgrade from a 2060 to 2070 - sounds like a no brainer to me!

All the best, hope this helps & let me know if you need more help

Thanks everyone for your posts. You've helped me make a decision and I'll be going with the Galax / KFA2 2070 EX.
It's a standard clocked GPU but I'm sure with some OC I can push it a little further if need be.

Currently running my 1080P 144HZ with GSYNC, there's really no requirement to OC it right away anyhow.

Really appreciate everyone's input!

Cheers,

Leif

Appreciate your detailed post but I've woken up today with a spanner thrown in the works.
An Ebay PC retailer currently has a 20% off deal where I could buy a Gigabyte Windforce 2X 2060 after discount for $559 which is a $140 difference compared to the $700 discounted 2070 and I just can't see the 2070 being $140 better.

I don't mind upgrading in 1-2 years if need be for that saving. Thoughts?

I was originally leaning to the 2060 only because I knew nothing about Galax, but other posters' comments made me more comfortable with the 2070 for only a little more.

But, you're right - that discount in my opinion definitely gives the Gigabyte a much better bang for your buck kind of ratio, and that's the way I'd go.
