Hey guys,

So my friend just upgraded to a 1080 and he's willing to sell me his msi gold edition gtx 980ti (not too familiar with this card) for $300. He bought it about 3 months ago, so it's in pretty good condition.

Now, given that the 1070 is about $430, should I buy his 980ti for 300 or just go for a 1070? The 1070 is going to be about $150 more, but I'm not quite sure which is better.

My other option is to wait for a few months (would price for either of them drop?)
I have a gtx 690 right now, and while outdated, it'll last me through awhile. What's the business with the 1060??

Anyways, I'm mostly looking for a discussion on what you guys would do, and why. Here are my specs: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/XXqjVn

I have a 2k monitor looking to play newer mmos, AAA titles, and league/overwatch.

Thanks in advance!

A 1070 beats a 980Ti by about 10% and minimum frame rates are about 14% better. PLus the 1070 is 150W compared to 250W for the 980Ti.

The 1070 being a newer genertion supports more features such as Ansel, better virtual reality performance, nvidia shadowplay, and SLI HB for better SLI performance compared to the 980Ti. The 1070 also supports the newer VSync option called fast sync that eliminates tearing.

I'd grab the 1070 and in the future if you upgrade monitors to 144Hz, GSync, or 4k, and want to SLI it'll be easier to grab a second 1070 as opposed to a 980Ti. Plus it's a newer generation so it'll have better resale in the future when upgrading.

Well at 10% slower than a GTX 1070 card costing an extra $150.

And $300 for a 980 Ti card there is not much to complain about is there.

How much would it cost to buy a new 980 Ti card is the question.

At 10% better performance from a 980 Ti the math is pretty simple considering what it costs to buy a 1070 card or a new 980 Ti card I would of thought.

partspicker UK shows a 980Ti for $350. But other 980Tis are over $400 but that must be old pricing. They'll have to drop prices to clear inventory. I'd hate to be a store with a pile of old generation video cards. The 1070 is around $410.

So is $300 a good price for a 980Ti. It's reasonable for a 980Ti used, considering you don't have to pay shipping or sales tax.

So the question is do you want to put $300 into an older generation card, when it could be put towards a newer generation, but you'll have to fork over another $150. Or do you want to save the money, just get the 980Ti and enjoy it for a year or 2 or possibly longer. The 980Ti will run your 1440p fine and either choice is fine.

If your budget is tight your better off with the 980Ti. The saved cash could be used elsewhere on the system that needs a little TLC. Your friend is taking a big loss by upgrade such a good card (980Ti), to such an expensive one with the 1080 and so soon. He just bought it 3 months ago.

You still have 3 years warranty left as well on the 980Ti so no problems if you go that route.
