Question Which GPU is better?

I'm planning to buy a GPU to play some simple games (mainly minecraft and older steam games) and i cant decide between the Geforce gt610 with 2GBVRAM or the AMD Radeon R5 220 also with 2GBVRAM, they are around the same price point so it's a matter of which one is better for games
(also my processor is the Intel Core 2 Quad q8400)

I definitely agree with hotaru.hino, if you have an available 6 pin pcie power cable, you have quite a few options like a GTX 250 or R9 270. Honestly I would also look at an r7 250 as theyre around that 25 dollar mark as well, come with 2gb vram, and can play some newer games, you could also pickup an RX 460 which is twice as fast, supports more capabilities, and you could actually move it over to a newer build if you wanted to in the next year or so, they're definitely more expensive though, around 50 bucks. To get anything faster than the RX 460 that doesnt need a PCIE power cable you would have to go to a GTX 1050 TI or GTX 1630 which are much more expensive. If you did have a PCIE power cable you could probably pickup a GTX 970 or RX 470 \ 570, but again, those are much more expensive.

i think i will go with a Radeon R5 230, for some reason here the geforce gts450 is more expensive than the gt610, and the gt730 doesnt support my power supply, is the r5 230 better than the 220 or is it just barely noticable of a diference?

if you can afford it, I suggest going for a GT 1030 (GDDR5 version).
only has a TDP of 30 Watt, it's also a small gpu and sure to fit into your case.

that does seem nice though, its out of my budget sadly, but i will consider getting it after i get one now, im just not sure if it is compatible with a 250w power supply

it's just 1 W higher than the GT 610 you were originally planning to buy. (GT 610 = 29 watt, GT 1030 = 30 watt).
if the 610 would work with your power supply, then the 1030 would.

anyway, how many cd drives and hdd are you using? If just one of each, then it's possible.
I did use about a year or two ago, a GT 1030 with a stock 250w psu. Although later upgraded the PSU after a few months, when I had the budget to do so.

_

anyway, just go with a gpu that fits your budget. :)

I have one Dvd-rom reader and one hdd, so i think it would work just fine, for now ill probably get just the amd r5 230 because it fits my budget (and it can play minecraft and ps2 era steam games which is bassically all i wanna play) but its nice to know a better gpu that is compatible for later when i want to upgrade my pc again :)

Honestly that cards even worse than the gt 610, would you be able to find an r7 240 or 250 for a reasonable amount around you?

Minecraft Java Edition uses OpenGL for rendering and will run much slower on older Radeon cards like the R5 220/230/240 than on Geforce cards of the same era.

If you have no other choices in your price range, I'd get the GT 610, but if you have other Geforce options, list them so we can help you find a better choice.

in my pricing range in terms of geforce, theres only really the gt610 and the geforce gt200 series, and on the amd side its mostly just the r5 series

The GT 220 is a bit faster than the GT 610, but the driver support may be an issue on newer titles that run on low end GPUs and may be an issue for newer Windows versions past Windows 7.

I'd just get the GT 610..
yeah im gonna get the gt610 definately, i had one before on a pre-built pc and it ran minecraft wonderfully and it was even able to handle gamecube/ps2 emulation

The cards you are talking about are not gaming cards.
They are not meaningfully better than the motherboard integrated graphics.
They are intended to give basic display support for a motherboard that does not have any graphics capability.
What graphics are you now using?
Presumably, you are using the graphics that comes with your motherboard.
What is that make/model of the motherboard?

You obviously have a severe budget restriction.
But, you should also only spend that if it will give you meaningful improvement.

well my motherboard does not have integrated graphics im pretty sure, and it is an STI 005492 and it currently has no GPU, im just looking for a simple and reasonably powerful gpu that fits my budget, and no im not interested in playing the latest games at all, most games i want to play on it are very graphically simple so i dont see a reason to overcompensate

Not to dash your hopes, but with a system that old, and generic system integrator (ie: Dell), your power supply is pushing it with that Core 2 Quad. You have to remember you can pull up to 68 more watts on the 12V rail and 75 more watts total (5V+12V) with some cards. For a 10+ year old supply, you can expect a reliable 150 Watts with peaks up to 200 Watts (60% continuous and 80% peak)

How, then, do you get any display output?
Your monitor has to connect to something, and I am trying to find out how strong that adapter might be.
Not good to spend money if you do not get a significant benefit.
If your games do not have fast action, then even minimal integrated graphics will suffice.

Some graphics cards, like the GTS450 are older units and need an aux 6 pin cable from the psu in addition to the 75w power supplied by the pcie x16 slot.
It seems you do not have such a cable.
Here is a list of many graphics cards and what power they need:
http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm

More modern cards like the GT730 do not need aux power, and will actually only use perhaps half of the 75W.
Can you supply a photo of the data plate of your psu?

And, there are a couple of variants of the GT730, 2 and 4gb vram,
GDDR3 and GDDR5, as well as 64 and 128 bit variants.
Strangely, the 64 bit cards are stronger.

@rom47394

using my lga 775 pc right now (Q9500 + 4gb ddr3 ram), so I could have a better grasp on the feeling of what pc you're using. These old things are rather slow, but could still handle old games just fine. Just a little worried on your power supply. Honestly, I've had this pc since 2014, and the only component it has that actually died is the stock psu which lasted till 2019. If you have not replaced the psu since you've acquired your machine, your psu might also be nearing it's end.

GT 610 should be more than enough for your needs. I just hope the power supply can hold out.
