Hi tom's hardware,

I've been looking for a new GPU to replace my crossfire 4850 as I find the crossfire thing annoying and useless in many cases.

The budget is 300 USD I'm willing to sacrifice GPU budget if motherboard/CPU upgrades are needed.

I can't get a dual nvidia as my motherboard only support crossfire.

I was directed by some friends at radeon 7870 and GTX 660, what do You think about these and maybe You can recommend anything else?

My currect specs are:

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965
Motherboard: ASRock M3A770DE
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Power supply: OCZ600MXSP (600W)
Stock fan cooling
Monitor is 1680x1050

Some friend of mine told me that with my processor Im only able to get the HD 7850 or 650 Ti BOOST.

Solution
Sapphire 7850 or 7870 oc. Room for processor upgrade and mobo upgrade in future. Quiet gpu and great cool performance. Very overclockable
Would probably get MSI GTX 650 Ti Boost Twin Frozr II or Sapphire HD 7850, but these are sub-200 dollar range and if you're willing to spend more than that you could always get GTX 760. There might be CPU bottlenecking to some extent but you would still see benefits over those cheaper cards.

After that, get a kit of 2x4GB 1600MHz RAM and an aftermarket CPU cooler such as Cooler Master 212 EVO.

As a user of a Radeon 7850, and a Phenom II 965 I could definitely recommend it to you.

I try to keep above 60fps in most games that I play, and it is managed quite well by the 7850. If I wasn't such an elitist about my framerate I could play BF3 comfortably at about 40 fps on Ultra. But that's at 1600x900, your resolution is slightly larger.

I have that exact processor installed in my ASRock 970 extreme 4 and I have a sapphire 7870 oc ghz edition 2gbddr5 and it performs wonderfully. You can find this gpu around 200 and newegg regularly gives 3-4 free game downloads with purchase. I would look into this option and I think you will be very happy with the results

I would say go with a 7870 since you can upgrade your CPU and/or mobo in the future. There may be some bottlenecking but it won't be too bad until you get a better CPU.

Considering your processor, Nvidia GTX 660 and 760 are good options. If u wana play on 1080p , go for 760. for less, 660, In AMD , a 7850 and 7870 would give you same performance as 660 , and if u wana go for 1080p , 7950 or higher would b better. If u opt for budget card, 7850 or a 660 or a 650 Ti( Boost ) is a very good choice
My recommendation is nvidia, practically, AMD is way back, especially in tesselation performance and they do not perform good in games with Physx, like borderlands 2. Go fr the 8350 (if possible )

Alright guys so im thinking about the 7870 or 660.
660 is cheaper and has just as good performance as 7870 from what ive seen on tests on the net.
The issue is, will the 660 be compatible with my motherboard? I mean the asrock doesnt support SLI.

As long as it has a pci-e slot it will work.

Is that a unlocked 965 (965BE)?
For the stock, locked multiplier CPU either the GTX660/HD7870 will be fine, will work in your motherboard and suffer no noticeable performance loss in an older gen PCI-E slot.
If it is the unlocked 'BE' chip I'd suggest you up the ante and aim for the next tier up: GTX760/660Ti/HD7950 and get a decent CPU cooler so you can overclock and release its hidden performance.
Do n't be too concerned with bottlenecking, like my i5 750 the 965 is a very capable chip-especially if overclocked-and many of the current crop of games DEMAND a quad to perform well.
And yes, I'm aware of the 'low' monitor resolution but the fact is even with an overclocked CPU and a GTX760 you'll still not see a consistent >60 FPS out of the current games with the settings pushed up.
