Which Grapics card is better? Gigabyte AORUS Radeon RX 580 8GB or Gigabyte AORUS XTREME GeForce GTX 1060 6G

I don't know which on would be better for gaming, the AMD is about $100 cheaper but i don't want to sacrifice too much on performance if i go with this, could someone help me out? Thx.

Hmm well if they're so close then AMD would probably be the better option because of the price but then i would be sacrificing a bit on the aesthetics of the graphics card.

580 is better. It'll handle 1440p a whole lot better than a 1060 will. Think of a 580 as somewhere in between a 1060 and a 1070. Both are capable of 1080p without issue, so max fps is meaningless, what you'll be looking for is minimums above monitor refresh. As said, some game engines prefer nvidia, some are happy with Amd, so in the specific games you are concerned about, as long as either card gets decent minimum fps, the winner will be the cheaper card. This can be affected by your psu though.

If you're seeing a $100 difference between those two cards, then the RX 580 would undoubtedly be the better value. Both cards should both provide a roughly similar level of performance, with either one being a bit faster than the other depending on the game. In general, the 1060 tends to be a bit faster in games built around older APIs like DX11, while the 580 tends perform a bit better in newer APIs like DX12 and Vulcan. A GTX 1060 will be more energy efficient and in turn put out less heat under load, but overall they are both competitive mid-range cards.

A 580 does not handle 1440p "a whole lot better than a 1060". Just like at 1080p, a 580 will perform worse in some games and better in others (maybe a bit better overall on average, but not by a large margin). A 580 is on par with a 1060, it does not occupy a spot between the 1060 and 1070.

Also, there are already games out that a 1060/580 can't get average fps over 60 at 1080/max settings, let alone maintain minimum fps >60.

So gta5 is the only game that's nvidia friendly to the point where the 1060 actually beats the 580. Every other game is an AMD win anywhere upto @15fps. And average wins are higher at 1440p.

Of course there's going to be games you can't max out and get over 60fps. The 1060/580 are close enough to mid-range cards that that's always going to be the case. But as your link clearly shows, thank you for that, the 580 is the better card, and at $100 cheaper, by far the better deal.

At 1440p the 1060 beats the 580 in 3/10 games for average fps, and 5/10 games for minimum (which you previously state is the more important metric to look at).

And average wins are higher at 1440p.

On average, based on the results for 1440p in that link, the 580 has 3% better min fps, 5% better average fps. 3-5% better on average is a far cry from being "a whole lot better". So, as I said previously, it's a bit better overall on average, but not by a large margin.

But as your link clearly shows, thank you for that, the 580 is the better card, and at $100 cheaper, by far the better deal.

It shows that it is a slightly better card. And yes, if it's a $100 cheaper then it's even more obviously the better choice. Which means there's no need to exaggerate the performance of the 580 by saying it performs significantly better and is in a whole different performance class than the 1060.

Edit: At 1080p the average difference is 6%, for both min and avg fps.

That really depends a lot on what games are being tested. GTA5 certainly isn't the only game where the 1060 performs better, and you need to test more than a handful of games to get the bigger picture. See the following roundups from Hardware Unboxed, for example.

In this video from a year ago, they tested 27 games, and the RX 580 came out just a few percent faster on average, at both 1080p and 1440p...

They revisited this scenario just a few weeks back, testing 27 mostly-different and in other cases updated games with overclocked cards, and this time the GTX 1060 was slightly faster on average, again within a few percent, though part of that could come down to the overclock-ability of the specific cards in question...

So really, these cards are almost equally-matched. Both have a number of games in which they are 15-20% ahead of the competition. If one card is priced significantly lower than the other though, it's most likely going to be the better option.
