I have upgraded my rig not too long ago (Dec 2014) and my system currently has a ASUS Strix GTX 970 without any coil whine issues and heat issues. I have read many threads but still confused on what brand to choose for GTX 980.

I am not looking to OC.

My current rig:-
Processor: Intel i5 4690 @ 3.50 Ghz
RAM: G Skill Sniper 4x2GB
Video Card: ASUS Strix Geforce GTX 970 4 GB
Motherboard: Asus H97-Pro Gamer
PSU: SeaSonic S12II 520W
Hard-disk: Seagate Barracuda HDD 1 TB
Western Digital Cavier Green HDD 1TB
Samsung 850 Pro SSD (1TB)
OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit

why would you upgrade to the 980? the 970 typically can be overclocked up to 980 performance. seems sorta a waste.

furthermore coil whine affects all brands and all gpus, there are suggestions we can give to help limit the possibility of getting it (for example, gigabyte and asus 980 boards seem to get a lot of coil whine) but that doesn't mean you won't get it with an evga or msi board as well.

overall the msi gaming 4g seems to be the "best" all round card in the 970/980 release, though you probably can't go wrong with any particular card that strikes your fancy.

Umm.. well. If your case supports it, the Gigabyte is good cooling model. Otherwise the Asus Strix or the EVGA SuperClocked 2.0 are both good cards if you don't have the room. Really can't go wrong with either one.
