I would like to get a GTX 980 but I am not sure which one. My budget is about $500. Also should I get an i5-4690 or an i7-4790k? (To go with the 980)

Thanks.

Only for gaming an i5 will do
Alternatives:
OC: i5 4690k + Z97
non-OC: i5 4460 + H97

If you do other stuffs like rendering, photo/video editing or record your games and thus want to invest a bit more to get hyperthread
Alternatives:
OC: i7 4790k + Z97
non-OC: E3-1231V3 (about same price as i5 4690k, has no iGPU) + H97

One is a "K" version the other not,so are you going or do you want to overclock?

I see games now that use 8 cores so the 4790(K) could be a good option taking the future in consideration. When not overclocking is the xeon also a possibility.

I do not plan on overclocking it.

I7 allows for hyperthreading which basically doubles your cores but most games do not use hyperthreading

Im not saying the 4790 isn't great for games. It is, it's the most picked for builds actually.

In that case is the xeon also a possibility. It gives hyper threading for less money,it only lacks a igp (integrated gpu).
Talking about these,
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/compare/intel-cpu-bx80646e31230v3%2Cintel-cpu-bx80646e31231v3%2Cintel-cpu-bx80646e31240v3%2Cintel-cpu-bx80646e31245v3/
just get the cheapest one where you live if going for this option.

Means that some do and with the possibility that the amount that do just will grow.
