Which Hard disk to replace for my Sony Vaio VPCF136FM laptop?

On starting my Sony Vaio laptop VPCF136FM, I get the message "SMART Failure predicted........Press F1"..... So I realized my hardisk is about to fail and would like to replace the hardisk with a 1TB Hardisk.

Present hardisk (which is about to fail) Specifications:

Model ID: SAMSUNG HM641JI (SpinPoint M7E 640GB)



1.Which is best option of hardisk which I should buy to replace my failing hardisk?......Please, if someone could provide the Model No with specifications of the new hardisk which I should buy to replace my failing hardisk, it would be greatly appreciated.



2.Will Samsung Spinpoint M8 1 TB Laptop Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LM024) work on my VPCF136FM laptop ? Or is it a 4k advanced format hardive? Will a 4k advanced format work on my laptop?

Hello... if you have windows 7 or above, 4K format is good... your hardrive looks pretty standard 2.5" 9.5mm and the Samsung Spinpoint M8 1 TB, has the same Spec. My doubt is if I buy the Samsung Spinpoint M8 1 TB Laptop Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LM024), will this hardisk work on my laptop or will I have problem installing the Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on it?

Will the Toshiba MQ01ABD100H work on my laptop?

Hello... your Computer and OS should handle 1TB fine if not, partition it in half... the Toshiba MQ01ABD100H also is a 2.5' 9.5mm drive.

Hello... you trying to strech my knowledge here... cause there are some laptops with special connectors... and they don't do a good job of showing pictures or describing connector names of the connectors on the back, there is Sata and m-Sata connectors on drives now... I'm going by size and typical match/offerings related to your SAMSUNG HM641JI which is a Sata connector... some smaller drives ( mm ) include adaptors/spacers, to fit 9.5mm.

Hello... If you are going to have to re-load... please record/write down the name of your devices and drivers in your device manager... the ones most important are your LAN, Sound, Web Cam, and Video components... sometime they use non-brand names for them, making it hard to find the right drivers for them.

If you aren't stuck on replacing you drive with another spinning disk drive, you may want to consider putting a SSD in its place.
Consider putting a Plextor M5P Xtreme drive in there. The current drive you are looking at putting in there is slow and sucks up power. If you want to give your laptop a bit more battery power and a lot more performance, do yourself a favor and spend the extra money.

You can buy the Plextor from Newegg or Amazon. The 256Gb version goes for $220. If you don't need 1Tb of space, this is what I would recommend!

It should work as long as they have the same SATA connections.

Thank you all for your valuable inputs which helped me decide the hard disk to buy. I went for a WD 7200rpm hard drive and as your'll had informed me the advanced 4k hard drive was not much of a issue as I was successfully able to install Win7/WinXP and Backtrack 5 on it without much problem. Though I had downloaded the WD Align software from their website just incase there would be some problem while installing WinXP....i did not have to use it.
