Which HD should I buy

OS - Win7 64-bit. My external HD just died. I can either buy a new internal drive and install it in my Rosewell case, or buy a standalone ext. drive. My PC has only USB 2.0 so I don't want to overbuy a drive whose speeds I'll never see. I understand I should buy 2 TB or smaller -- and . This drive is only on rarely for backup only, not as ongoing storage. Online reviews say WD green is good choice because it runs cool. But there are variations of green -- Caviar, etc. and I don't know which is right for my setup. My current storage = 650 gigs. Thanks for advice -- am looking for least expensive way to go.

Solution
the WD Green should work fine since it will not be used as the main drive.

most external drives nowadays will come with a USB3.0 which is backwards compatible to USB2.0
