Hey all I am upgrading from an Athlon 64 3000+ to a Opteron 165. On the current CPU I have a Zalman 7000 AlCu Heat sink. The Opteron came with the new HSF that has the 4 heat pipes.

I read an article prasing the new HSF from AMD (I thought it was on THG) but I can't find it now. I am wondering which HSF will cool the CPU better I do plan some mild over clocking.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a zalman cooler. I think it is the 9000 model. The one that does a figure 8 heatpipe. I dont' know the number right off my head though. It cools my opteron 170 well. Remember those things aren't rated to hit high temps like xp's

I would get the Zalman CNPS 9500. My X2 4400 idles at 22 o C, and barely gets over 26 with one Prime95 torture test running on each core (2 torture tests running at once). I have do have a 120mm fan on mine, but it doesnt make much difference compared to the stock 92mm fan.

Use the stock for now, then later on if you need to switch to a better one. While using the stock you can also try this out:

http://www.overclockers.com/tips1187/

It's an air flow mod in your PC using foam board that you might find at an art store. I did it and it dropped my temps down like 5 degrees C at least, and all it cost me was a few bucks for the foam board!

Thanks all for the input but I think one important point asn't spelled out quite properly in my first post.

I have the Zalman 7000AlCu already and I now have the new 4 heat pipe stock cooler from AMD and i am wondering which of the 2 will be more effective.

I have seen a few reviews praising the new stock cooler for the Opty's but I don't know which of the 2 is better. With any other stock cooler this would be a Duh question but it doesn't seem to be right now with this new cooler.

The heatpipes on the stock one might do a better job at taking the heat away, but I supose it would be louder. I supose you keep the warenty if you use the stock, so go with that if you are unsure.
