You don't need an i7 to support a particular gpu, you could pair a gtx 1070 with an i3, i5, i7 (or amd) etc. The cpu that would best suit you depends on the game(s) you're looking to play. If looking to play bf1 or try to max out gtav or other cpu intensive games then an i7 would benefit from the hyper threading. Otherwise an i5 will perform nearly the same in the vast majority of games depending which i5. In cpu intensive games the higher clock speed of faster models like a 6600k or 7600k would be better than a lower end i5 like a 6400.
