The CX and the VS are ok, but there are usually better options for $10-$20 dollars more. Though, the CX and VS can often be found on sale at unbeatable prices. If budget is a big concern and the price is right, either of these would do.

Bear in mind that Toms Hardware is loaded with Power Supply snobs(myself included) who think that anything not made by Seasonic or SuperFlower and loaded with all Japanese Capacitors is junk, despite the fact that 99% of all PSU's fit this category and work fine. That's why the CX and the VS get bashed on a lot. But the pro reviewers like both, IF your on a budget and the...
The VS series is Corsair's worst, just a note.

I would recommend the Zotac 970 over the Asus GTX 960. You'll get better performance and more memory. However, your CPU will bottleneck the GTX 970 in CPU intensive games, but not by too much. I don't know if you are planning to SLI or overclock, but if you are doing neither, get the VS Series 650w since it's only $1 difference.

@learnbitbybit, so if i go with the cx series i will be able to overclock for a bit, is that right?

@jdcranke07 the other option are fsp raider 550w 80+silver and raidmax rx600af 80+ bronze are they any better?

That said, there are much worse ways to spend your money than a better quality PSU, assuming you have the extra cash to throw at it.

Interesting that you would mention Jonny Guru, which always gave the CX good reviews.

No Corsair PSU is likely to take out your hardware. I agree its probably worth the extra cash to go with something better, but those two are respectable.

That is probably the only Johnny Guru review I have read so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
