I'm looking to upgrade my desktop and right now the options I have are either:

i5 3570K + ASROCK Z77 PRO3
For 135€ (about 160$)

Or

i7 4770K + ASUS Z87-K
For 250€ (about 300$)

I can honestly get either, but which onde do you think is a better deal on performance/value?

Thank you in advance,
Sergio.

May not be twice as fast but when dealing with old used equipment buy the fastest thing you can afford. There is no reason to buy a CPU 1 generation older, not at that price.

He specifically asked which was a better deal though. If I was you though @OP I'd try and see if maybe I could find either an 8350k and mobo or an 8600+mobo for $300. Both will be far quicker than either of those.

Price/perf though the 3570k still wins IMO.

Yes, and IMO the better deal is to (unless its excessively priced) spend the money on the newest fastest thing you can afford. The 4770k is newer, has better ipc, and twice the threads thanks to hyperthreading, it will be noticeably faster in games. When you're buying essentially 4 generation old hardware Its a no brainer.

Now I do agree with you that at that price depending on market he should be able to afford something much newer that would beat up on both of them. Starting to wonder why we are limited to these two old options.

You both make great points. Sadly, 8th gen CPUs require a RAM upgrade as well, seen as im using DDR3 and most 1151 boards use ddr4.

I'm trying to spend the least amount of money possible on getting rid of the i5 650 thats daunting my desktop right now, however, the i7 4770k looked very promising, but since it's not a great deal, I might just go with the cheaper option.

At the price i'd consider saving your money a bit more to buy some ram and get a newer upgrade.

Sell your old ram on ebay, you can recoup some of the cost. Heck sell everything, theres always someone out there who wants old stuff. and 20 bucks in your pocket is better than old hardware lying around.

Not sure where you are located but in euros for example:

WAY Better choice.

Rouge leader is right, the 4770k isn't a bad deal. That CPU and motherboard for $300 flat isn't terrible. If you'll be sticking with it a few years as your main system it's probably worth getting, especially if you have a good cooler to overclock it a little with.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you from? To get an idea on prices.

the advantage of eBay, but you can see above while there is no PCPP for Portugal, I'm sure there are equivalent sources, or just have parts shipped from another EU country. Thats what i would do.
