Which is best i7 cpu for gaming?

Building a brand new rig. Want to know which i7 is the best for gaming. I kinda want overkill a bit. But not to much! A buddy recommend i7 4790k, could I go more like in the 5000 series or would that be to much? also if you have recommendations for a motherboard! That be awesome. I am going to get a gtx 970, and prob corsair vengeance 1600 8g ram sticks.

An i5 is more than enough for gaming, even for dual GPU setups.

So any i7 you choose is OK.

The 5xxx series is for X99 ..., at this point in time, can't go higher than a 4790k. It has a slight advantage over the 4690k but if budget limited, ya best spending that $100 on GFX upgrade rather than an i7. If not overclocking, the advantage is a lot more significant .... it's 10% faster than the i5 at stock settings

I wouldn't recommend an i7 for gaming - you are wasting money unless you do hyperthreading tasks.
