In theory with a 4 and 8 GB stick will run in 'flex mode', which should give equivalent performance to 8 GB (2x4GB) running in dual channel plus the extra 4 GB at single channel. So getting 12 GB is strictly better. But as said above, combining sticks that weren't bought together in a kit doesn't always work.
Since you are using on board video by the sounds of it I would go with the 12gb or Ram if the sticks are compatible since your on board Video uses system memory. 12 is not typically a great scenario though. Like the other person stated you want to maintain Dual Channel identical memory when possible.

AS a side note if you do go with the 12GB memory and are using on board video. some bioses allow you to control how much memory your on board video can use if this is an option for you I would go set yours to 4 GB or if that high isn't available set it as high as it will go.
This dedicates memory to your video card.

This article gets me thinking even more and the reality is your better off taking that money and buying a cheap Discrete video card. Even entry level will perform better than an on board video card.
