Which is better: AMD 6300 or i3-4160?

I'll be buying a new gaming rig but I don't know what to choose because from most reviews say that the i3 is better than the 6300 but it's only a dual core processor and the AMD 6300 is a quad core processor. I want to play games like GTA V and Far Cry 4 where both games really require quad core cpus.

My gpu would be Gtx 950 with an 8gb memory.

I think the i3 is going to be your better bet.

You'll also have an upgrade path going with an i5/i7 down the road if you want. If an fx 63xx isn't giving you the gaming performance you want then chances are neither will the fx 8xxx which is the amd upgrade path. It just add 2 cores to the existing 6 rather than any meaningful core performance. Keep in mind that ipc or per core performance isn't just single threaded, it means each core/thread is stronger.

The i3 has stronger performance per Core and also has Hypertheading which helps it behave a bit like a quad core but not quite the same. The 6300 has weaker cores but 6 of them. If games are designed to use multiple cores efficiently then the 6300 should do better but often games can't efficiently use more than 4 cores/threads and often the individual core power of the i3 wins.

Personally if you want to play those games and future AAA games id strongly suggest saving a little more and getting an i5, the 4440 or 4460 do very well and are way better than the 6300 for gaming
