Alright, so there are 2 cards which i have in mind...

1. EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclocked ACX 2GB
2. XFX AMD Radeon R9 280X 3GB Double Dissipation

Questions...
Now which one would be the best for gaming?
i'm planning to play BF4 so how much of a difference in frames when BF4 has the 'mantle' thingy?
I like the sexy R9 280X 😉 so is that a reason to choose the amd over the nvidia?
Nvidia has this shadowplay recording software, how does that compare to fraps?

So as you can see im jumping between the two. 770 nice card, ok looking, has shadowplay. R9 280X sleek and sexy card, 😉 $30 cheaper and has more vram. HERLPPPPP

P.S The 3 games don't concern me i would probably just sell the 3 for $80-100 i dont play those types of games im a FPS person

I believe the 280x is more powerful than the 770, it also has more VRAM, which helps at higher resolutions/multimonitor. If you're playing on a standard 1920x1080 monitor, you can't go wrong with either. Shadowplay, although I'm not too versed on the specifics, taxes your CPU/system a whole lot less than fraps does. I played around with a bit while playing BF4 and didn't really notice any FPS drops. I usually average 90-120fps on ultra with my system. Oh and the free games you get with any GPU, you're better off giving it away or redeeming it yourself, they don't resell for much, on average $10-15 each.

the r9-280x is looking amazing in xfire in bf4... the xfire results are out of this world. Mantle is coming soon, so you might want to hold off till the end of this month and see what mantle does to Radeon cards in bf4. If the rumors are to be believed that r9-280x will perform on par with a titan thanks to mantle.

Without mantle or xfire the 770 is currently the (slightly) better card in bf4

Mantle isn't suppose to be released until December, the two cards are vary similar in performance 3GB VRAM doesn't do much right now (unless your doing surround/ eyefinity, that's a different story) in a year it might though. I just ordered a 770 Saturday mostly because I've been having good luck with Nvidia over AMD lately, you can't really go wrong either way.

I commented in another thread you posted in about this but I'll leave a comment here as well.

In short, they trade blows but the 770 is SLIGHTLY better. The performance difference is mostly negligible though.

However I think the 280x has more upside with the possible decent performance bump with mantle. If mantle is in the least bit effective, the 280x will take the upper hand. I also expect many developers to utilize mantle with AMD hardware being used in both next gen consoles.

the 3gb of vram seem to matter in xfire/sli with bf4... as the nvidia cards seem to be vram bottlenecking in SLi at 2gb.

Are you planning to run 2 cards or do three monitors though? A 290X would be a much wiser investment in that case.

Well i'm planning to run just one card (maybe 2 in the future) and see if i can run 2560 x 1440 on my catleap monitor at ultra settings bf4 if not, ill just drop it back to 1080p

sweet although final thoughts? if u had to chose between the r9 280x and the 770 what would it be? xfx is the nicer card and 770 has shadowplay and you record gameplay

I dont like the idea of 2GB at 1440p u should look into getting 4GB at that resolution..

Hey, I recently had the same debate as I was building my system, I opted for the gigabyte 770 4 gb OC windforce which only costed slightly more. I know some will comment that 4gb is excessive over 2gb but games are changing and I play with numerous screens where it does begin to effect performance. I know this isn't your exact card but I found this site interesting for comparing http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=1902&gid2=1860&compare=geforce-gtx-770-windforce-3x-oc-4gb-edition-vs-radeon-r9-280x. Also the 770 version I choose comes close to the performance of the 780 GTX obviously not on par but close, which is quite a performance leap over the 280x I wish I had the link which compared the two's performance for you. Also I have had numerous cards from both ATI and Nvidia over the years and I find that Nvidia has better support and drivers obviously this is opinion oriented though. Also the gigabyte incorporates an additional fan which aesthetically makes it look bad ass, and keeps temperatures cooler which assists maintaining higher frame rates, and the overclocking capabilities.

Its really not opinion based crossfire is horrible compared to sli and many people will tell you that

Haha I completely agree, I also find that they release drivers allot slower, and after time ATI stops caring for its slightly older products I have had a horrible time keeping my older machines.

Dunno if you bought the 770 yet or not, but go for a 280x AT LEAST. If you already own the catleap, know that games made this year (especially BF4) recommend AT LEAST 3GB VRAM in 1440p. BF4 can around 2.4gb Vram all by itself on ultra in 1080p, let alone 1440p. If you plan on Playing on Ultra or Very High settings in games at 1440p, get at least the 280x or you'll have buyer's regret by spring 2014 when your vram limit forces you to play on medium settings.

I'd say shoot for the new $399 R9 290 If you want a card that will run 1440p for more than 2 years. It's what I plan on buying as a budget gamer. Its as fast as a 780 in speed, but has 4gb Vram and a huge 512bit bus)

I hope you didn't buy the 770 yet . . . If you haven't, and REALLY want a 770, the 4gb model might be up your alley, but it's a bit more expensive. If plan on playing BF4 a lot, buy the 280x/290, as a 280x running mantle next month will=GTX 780 or Titan. Radeon gpu's in general run games better in 1440p/1600p/4k, so that might be an important factor for you too.

eh the option to get a 280x and going crossfire sounds horrible atm..I rather would go 770 2 or 4GB and sli..NV has proven to have better drivers and sli support

Well, he's planning on running just one card right now. I personally think he should go for a single 290 or a 770 4gb (290 has far better performance) I think sli 2 770 2gb is a HORRIBLE idea, no matter how well it works. 2GB just isn't enough anymore, and he'd have two cards running only 2gb total. If he's low on money, he should at least get a 280x 3GB. They prove faster that a 770 in BF4, which is the game he will mainly be playing. Don't throw out random Benches or combo deals, he wants the best card for competitive FPS games, and that card is either the 280x 3GB for cheap, 770 4gb (you'd pay up the ass for the price/performance it really gets) or the 290 for a high but good price. I'm just saying, 280x's actually do REALLY well so far in games, almost beat crossfired Titans sometimes. I wouldn't just count out AMD crossfire based off their past.

To this day people still say crossfire is not as good as sli. I would still go 770s just in case thinking long term instead of getting a amd gpu then possible going crossfire running into issues..

This PC isn't going to last him 500 years . . . .Why should he pay more now for a card that is worse and more likely to outdate when he MIGHT Sli/Crossfire in the future. To be honest, 2GB isn't enough for 1440p. Get that out of the way. Its between a 770 4GB at a premium price, a 280x 3GB at a moderate but far more affordable performance (almost = to a 770) or the step up, but futureproof R9 290 4GB (wait for the aftermarket versions). 780 in there too, but it costs pver $100 more for a good model of the card comparable to the base 290.

If you already bought a 770, use it a bit, and keep an eye on its Vram at first. 2GB should run about 95% of your games fine, but I gurantee you are losing a bit of FPS in 1440p in BF4 just from Vram shortage. If it suits you, no reason to return it, but it won't last as long as I think you hope it will. Next years games will all use just about 2GB Vram 24/7 in 1440p, many reaching up to 3GB, so . . . Let us know what you're doing and how you like it.

You will unfortunately not be able to use that extra 2GB of the 4GB version without significant performance hit anyway. Get 280x I would suggest. But get the dx11.2 version guess it is xtl.

in sli you wont have any issues getting there

Something is wrong with your setup..Ive been past 1.5/2.5GB with no issues/lag/or frame drops. Same thing use to be said with the 2GB 660ti and ive been past the 1.5GB no issues as well
